I was born and raised in Kisumu, and stayed until I was 16-years-old. When I was 16, I moved to Nairobi to search for my future life. When I arrived in Nairobi I finished school and began searching for a job. I moved to Kibera in 2002 and have lived here since. I now have four children, the oldest is ten and the youngest are twins of three and a half years.
For the future I want to be in a better place than this. I want to expand my business so that I can get more profit and help my children to have a better life. When I first started my business it was not easy and I would return home not selling anything and wondering "How can I make it?" But I recently attended an entrepreneurial training and after a few months I began to sell more and now people call me asking to buy it from my house. I want to continue working hard because I want a better life for my children.
My business is selling homemade peanut butter. I started this business in 2010 because it is a business that few people have so there was little competition. I had never seen anybody selling it here so I thought it would be smart to start.
My biggest challenge is capital for buying the peanuts and the machinery I need. These things can be costly, and I often do not have enough money to buy what I need.
In the future, I would like to expand my business to supermarkets and other stores so that I can sell more peanut butter and sell it faster. I like this business because you can't starve because it can make a very good profit. I also am proud to have been successful in an area where not many people were selling before me.
I want to use my loan to purchase groundnuts in advance. They cost 120 shillings per kilogram and I would buy 35 Kilograms and use the rest for the other costs such as charcoal and renting a machine. This will increase my profit because I will be able to sell more to meet the high demand. This loan will impact my business because it will allow me to sell more than I have in the past. I can then save the profits and reinvest them in my business, helping it to grow and reach new markets. I hope that this loan will help me to make a a better life for my family, provide for my children's education, and so I can move from the slums.
