I am a 23 year old business lady.I have been farming since i was 12 years old, helping my mother to plough peoples farms at a fee.I worked as a maid from a young age,15 years, when i could not get school fees to go ahead and join secondary school.I come from a polygamous family,my father has four wives and his priority in our poor family was a few so i went to the city and worked in peoples homes earning about 20$ to 30$ a month sleeping in kitchens as i worked as a housemaid cum nanny.Sometimes i worked on the side ,washing bachelors clothes at a fee.I saved the money i earned through those years, sometimes not being paid and left for the rural area and used my savings to buy fresh potatoes and fry potato fries and sell them at a profit, making some average profits per day. Those profits enabled me to buy a small piece of land in Bungoma county which i am expanding as i continue to do business.
I got married 5 years ago to a wonderful man who does all he can to support me with the little he also earns and i have one baby boy, and now i plant and sell kale, cabbage, carrots and tomatoes.
I buy potatoes from the very fertile Mt Elgon area of our county, about 20 miles away, have them transported them by motorbike and peel them by hand, fry them and sell potato fries at the gate to Sang'alo Institute of Science and Technology. The students love the fries and this enabled me to open a store right at that gate of the institution and i have slowly stocked it with various items that the students need such as pens, books,a computer to edit research papers (i attended training in typing and editing and basic computer).I bought a hair shaving machine with my prior Zidisha loan and have been succesfuly running the barbershop in the partitioned room next to my food shop.I would like to buy a blowdrying machine to add to my barbershop and a computer to enhance my retail shop to cater more for the students needs.
I will buy 2 blowdriers worth50$ each for my barbershop and a mirror. And i will also add my own savings of around 100$ and buy a new computer worth 160$ for my shop plus 10 rims of plain typing paper.I expect to print papers for the college kids in the nearby insititute and i am sure to make at least 50$ per week from typing and printing alone while the blowdry will help me earn at least 1$ per client, hopefully make around 4$ per day.I am saving to build my house and hope this will enable me build on the land i have been paying for.
