I was born on 2nd December, 1958 in a small mining town of Mufulira, Zambia. This small town borders another town called Mokambo of the Republic of Congo which is approximately 20 km or 10 minutes drive. I started my Primary School in 1966 and completed Primary School in 1972. I passed for form 1 at Kantanshi Secondary School and completed my Form Five in 1977. I went for a compulsory National Military Service for 6 months before enrolling at National Resources Development College (NRDC) in 1978. I completed and obtained a Diploma in Agriculture in 1981 and joined Government in the Ministry of Agriculture as a Research Assistance and later in 1984 as a Seeds Inspector. I resigned in Government and joined Zambia National Commercial Bank (ZNCB PLC) as an Agricultural Credit Officer giving unsecured Agricultural loans to small scale farms in all parts of the Republic of Zambia. I rose through the ranks upto Manager - Retail Assets in charge of disbursing and managing scheme loans to salary based employees both in government and Parastatal/Private companies. I retired from the Bank on 2nd December, 2013 after working for ZNCB PLC (Zanaco) for 26 years unbroken service and acquired a small property where I raise broilers. Since the terminal benefits were not enough to allow me maintain the broiler business I decided to request for a working capital from your institution
With my back ground of agriculture I decided to do broiler rearing since the market is readily available and is an alternative cheap source to beef. With the continued fall in the value of our local currency (The Kwacha) against the Dollars food prices have been rising on daily basis and Beef Meat has become expensive outside the reach of ordinary Zambians and the main source of meat for ordinary Zambians is chicken (Broilers) which is being considered cheaper and affordable for a family of 5 people hence the demand for broilers has grown threefold that it has become more profitable than any other agricultural business with readily available working capital. I have raising at 100 broilers per batch and with your assistance I will increase to 200 broilers per batch. The Chicken run has the capacity to raise 400 broilers per batch but have been hampered by lack of working capital. The main cost of the broiler business is the cost of feeds which has now increased from K110 to K187 per 50kg bag. and you need 2 bags of starter, 4 bags of grower and 2 bags of finisher upto 8 weeks in readiness for sale. Previously a broiler was sold at K25 but now the price has increased to K35. We have been trying to reinvest the small profits into business but due to the rise of feeds, chemicals and medicines for treating chickens the profit margin has reduced drastically. Other the small profit has been helping us to send our children who are in colleges and thesurplus for home consumption
The Loan will be used for purchasing 50 day old chicks, buy disinfectants, medicines to prevent newcastle and gumbolo diseases, three bags of broiler starter, three bags of broiler grower and three bags of broiler finisher. i already have drinkers and feeders to execute the program of rearing 50 broilers and this is the fourth batch i am raising hence the experience in this line of business.
