My name is Susan Gateru. I was born in Thika as the first born in a family of 6 children. I am a wife and a mother to 2 children. I have schooled up to secondary level but I did not get a chance to further my studies as my parents who are casual labourers in a flower farm could not afford much to pay for my college fees.

I developed a passion for hair and beauty long ago, and this passion led to my attainment of braiding and plaiting skills. I could plait my neighbours' hair and the little money that I charged them gave me the motivation to be in the hair and beauty industry. When I got married, I pleaded with my husband to pay a little money so that I could be trained in other beauty skills. I am glad that today I rely on my salon for a living. I feel very satisfied since this is what I have loved to do since I was a young girl and finally it has employed me giving me hope for the future.

It is my desire to expand and grow to open a big beauty parlour that can become a one-stop business offering all beauty and therapy services to the ladies

I am into the salon business. I manage and operate a salon in thika town centre where I offer services to the lady students of mount kenya University as well as the residents of thika town and neighbouring villages. I started this business 4 years ago, and I am proud to be in this business because I can utilize my God given skills to earn a living. I am very happy that my good services keeps my customers coming back and to me as this means constant business.

This business however comes with its own challenges. Due to the fluctuating fashion trends in market, lack of enough capital hinders me from adapting quickly to the current trends but I believe with the Zidisha loan I will be on toes with the fashion.

In amonth i make profits of upto $ 170 which i use to hep my family with basic needs

I am going to use this loan to expand my business. I am going to purchase hair products worth Kshs. 10,000, a blow-dryer for Kshs. 2,500, and hair additions for Kshs.2,500. With this purchase I will offer my services to more customers hence increase my profits.
