How are you all? I was born and partially raised in Mombasa, Kenya. I completed primary school at Mustard Seed Schools in Nakuru. I completed my high school at St Patrick's Hill School in Kajiado. I am currently studying Law at the Kenya School of Law in Nairobi.
I have endured several hardships in order to begin my business and succeed in it. I did all sought of jobs, walked to and from work and school in order to save every penny to begin my business. For example, I used to walk with a jug and metal cup and sell white tea and black coffee at 15 Kenyan shillings a cup the whole day. I also used to work for an elderly lady who owned a small restaurant. I used to report work at five in the morning, cook chapati, tea and mandazi for early risers, wash dishes after that, pill potatoes, onions, carrots and tomatoes which would be used for cooking lunch. During lunch I would be told to serve customers in the restaurant and to others that order within the vicinity. I also used to wash people's houses, clothes and dishes whenever told to do so ( Kenyan's call it kibarau) . I also worked at a quarry. I used to shape stones that would be used for building. These are among the jobs i did in order to start my pig project. In three years, i had saved 542,234 Kenya shillings.
I run a pig project in Kiserian which is in Kajiado County. With money that i had saved from working odd jobs, i approached my bank requesting that they may assist me to finance in building the pig sties. I built sties of fifteen pens. I then bought five female piglets and one male piglet from two farms.Once the females (gilts) grew, they were served by the male (boar). The business then grew from there. I have been selling pigs for slaughter to butcheries, farmers choice slaughterhouse and to individuals. I have also been selling served sows and piglets to farmers who would like to rear pigs.
I currently own 45 sows, 4 boars, 76 lactating piglets, 203 weaned piglets and 33 baconers.
One of the challenges I face is that I do not process my own feed for the pigs and the companies that do, sell substandard and expensive feed. Sometimes they spoil the feed and when the pigs begin to fall sick or when they fall sick, the farmer is blamed. I would like to purchase a mill and a flatbed weighing scale. The mill would be used to grind raw materials such as maize, maize jam, fish meal, blood cake and soyabeans full fat which are key ingredients for processing feed. Other ingredients are sold in powder. The weighing scale is important in weighing the raw materials before they are mixed.
Processing my feed is important because there would not be stunted growth and any ailment brought as a result of substandard feed will be nullified.
The mill costs 150,000 Kenya shillings and the weighing scale costs 13000 Kenyan shillings. I have managed to place a down payment of 30,000 Kenya shillings. I currently need 121,300 Kenyan shillings. This money will be paid in 6 months. I gladly appreciate your assistance.
I am a pig farmer from Kiserian Kajiado County in Kenya. I will use the loan to buy farm equipment. I buy pig feed from feed companies that process substandard feed. The feed is also expensive without any nutritional value to the pigs. I would like to buy a feed mixer and a mill each with a 7.5hp three phase. The mixer will mix 250kg per every 15minutes and the mill will grind 90kg of grains every 30 minutes. Using a superior formulation, I will ensure that my pigs are fed quality feed every day.
