Hello, I'm James Kamau, 28 year old single dad from Nairobi Kenya. I come from the Kikuyu tribe and I grew up in central region where we had a rice farm. We grew a specific type of rice known as pishori, the best in our country. I was very broke at one point and googled how to start a business using a thousand Kenya shillings, which is all I had. I bought potatoes and charcoal and started selling fried potatoes outside. My late mother bought me some cooking oil and the rest is history. My favorite pastime is creating music in the studio.
I have expanded my business by building a small structure, in our home town we call them 'vibandas'. I sell fried potatoes and other snacks like samosas to the neighborhood people, especially students in nearby schools for their break and lunch meals. I chose this business because it was what I could afford with the capital I had, though I have come to love it very much. My typical costs per day are around 1500 and my profit everyday is roughly four thousand Kenya shillings. I use the profits to take care of my beautiful daughter and myself and all our needs.
I will expand my sitting area and also buy a bit more stock to ensure higher profits to be able to provide for my daughter and be of greater service to my customers. I also plan to buy avocados and bananas to go with my platters.
