My name is Ronald Onsare, male aged 40 years. I went to primary school at Mumias Boys then proceded to Lenana School for my O levels. From there I joined Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and qualified with a degree in Food Science. The biggest challenge in my life has been finance. I lost my father as I joined high school and my mother had to take care my other three siblings and I from her earnings as a primary school teacher. Luckily I am gifted and thus went thruogh school successively. However after graduation in 1999 I had to wait until 2006 when I landed a meaningful job from which I saved and put up some three rental houses at my rural home in Kisii. When I left formal employement in 2011 I relocated back home with my family, wife and twovchildren aged 11 and 9 now. Presently other than the rentals income I have began rearing pigs. I recently bought a sow which will farrow in a few weeks. Within the next three to five year I want to have grown this venture sustantially to a good economic scale. I plan to pool like minded farmers in my locality to set up an abbotoir and also look into ways to add value to pork and other resulting products relying mainly on my food science training. I would wish my kids to grow up and venture into agribusiness and I believe I am laying the best foundation for them. My son already keeps a couple of rabbits and geese. He has sold some to friends and classmates and I see the passion in him. In my free time I watch cricket and documentaries on nature. I am also a fitness enthusiast and at least hits the gym thrice a week

My main income of KES 30,000 per month comes from my rentals. I occasionally give technical advise to food and beverage manufacturers at a fee but that has not been as reliable. My wife chips in from her tailoring business. Nonetheless I have began the pig rearing venture as elaborated earlier and I strongly believe it is going to be a sound economic vehicle to my long term financial goals. I settled on pig farming because of the growing demand for the meat, high fecundity rate, quick maturity and the relatively low cost of raising them compared to other livestock. At the moment the monthly expense on raising the sow is KES 5,000. With time I intend to expand. The income from this investment will be from selling piglets, selling mature pigs for pork and selling bred sows for upcoming farmers. I intend to save the proceeds for the pork and pig value chain.

I would buy pig feed - sow and weaner costing USD 10 for 20kg. With time I intend to increase the loan amount so that I manage my sow and six gilts. I will sell four after six months and retain two for breeding. Good returns are expected from the sell of mature pigs after around six to seven months from now.
