My name is Everline Adhiambo Odera. I am the first born in a family of six children. I was not able to complete my high school education due to lack of finances and as such I started working at the early age of 16. My mother was hard working and had opened her own makeshift food kiosk where she employed me to assist her in her daily activities. I was able to learn the basics if cooking and after that the advanced techniques of making traditional recipes.
This knowledge of traditional recipes allowed me to open my own kiosk after my mother passed away. The lack of eateries offering traditional dishes made my outlet very popular and we gained recognition in my locality.
My three children also aspire one day to be world renown chefs and are a constant source of inspiration to me. I would like to see them achieve their ambitions. This motivates me further to try to create an example of what hard work can achieve.
My main hobby is cooking and on my free time I try to learn the different recipes from other neighboring communities in my country.
I am currently doing retail sales of food and beverages in the Embakasi Central constituency of Nairobi County. Food and daily sustenance is an essential need, lack of which results in starvation and hunger.
I chose this kind of business due my general love for cooking. During my earlier childhood years my mother was wise enough to show me the ropes and trained me in all the recipes handed down to her by her mother. In the community I come from we have many traditional dishes that have been neglected and forgotten about over the years due to the fact that the younger population has embraced western culture and diet over the traditional.
My main aim in opening this business was to remind my community of the rich and divers heritage they were about to throw away as concerns many of the traditional dishes that had been forgotten.
On a normal day, I purchase my supplies from local wholesalers very early in the morning or make orders directly from my suppliers in the evening at the close of business. I spend an average of Kes.8,000.00 to Kes.10,000.00 for these purchases. At the end of the day we do our reconciliations and on a good day the profit after sales can amount to Kes.4,000/-. I have a support staff of 4 individuals who I pay Kes300/- each. The surplus amount I put in a savings account so as to cater for the needs of my family namely, daily expenses and school fees for my 3 children.
I would like to raise funds to upgrade my business to the next level. The funds will be used to purchase additional equipment such as a refrigerator, additional cooking utensils, commercial grade oven and furniture for the restaurant.
I wish to purchase additional equipment for my retail food outlet and restaurant dealing specifically in Traditional African Cuisine. I have been trained by my late mother and have a vast knowledge in this culinary art.
I wish to purchase an oven and a commercial sized grill which will be used to prepare the delicacies and store any left overs for the day.
This business has proven to be very lucrative due to the fact that there are very few similar such entrepreneurs offering this service. I am inspired by names like Osewe who started out in a dingy iron sheet wall premises and later went on to own a 20,000sq ft establishment in the central business district of Nairobi, Kenya.
