My name is Stephen, a resident of kitale in Kenya. I'm an enthusiastic farmer and also have interest in value addition to farm products as well in engineering solutions to solve problems that farmers face day to day. I'm also interested in agriculture which is actually what I want to be remembered for. In the dry season I have the habit of boosting my Agricultural production to take advantage of better prices in the market. I usually grab the opportunity to produce vegetables off season so as to capture the good markets when supplies are low. I already have about 3000 plant population under capsicum but I am pushing to plant more to reach an area of 1 acre.
I'd like to grow my farming enterprise by taking it up more seriously. I'm targeting school markets as these are easily available to me given my acquaintances with school heads. I also do capsicum, beans, cabbages and maize. This dry season my specialty is capsicum which is coming up well. In my long term plans I'm however going into avocado production and oil extraction. I am making avocado pulp drying apparatus for this purpose. The funds will enable me to have the drier and hydraulic oil press ready by February when the next avocado season kicks in.
After a good amount of research and reading i have elected to establish a grapevine. Seedlings from propagators cost 400 shillings so o hope to acquire about 100 seedlings for starting off the project. The grape farm will be developed side by side with avocados this being my project for better returns and reduced recurrent expenses as i head towards retirement from formal employment. The vineyard will be in production within two years and is expected to breakeven in three years. The management of the project will necessitate employing one person of regular basis and a few more hands occasionally on casual basis to provide labor thus having an impact on my immediate community. The fruits will also provide employment indirectly along the distribution chain. Value addition by oil extraction and wine making will help boost returns in due course
