I, Gilbert Nyaware Olwe.I was brought from a very poor family, in East Uyoma Location,East Katweng'a Sub- Location, Migowa Village near Migowa Primary and Secondary school and did my education up to secondary level.
Through hardship, I lost both parents and became an orphan heading family. My parents had ten (10) acres of land . I and my wife used to work hard on the field on small holding farm as to achieve the farm produce for survival.
We started to plant maize, millet ,beans ,all kinds, kales, tomatoes ,butternuts, watermelons ,cotton, onions, sunflowers and cassava.
During the harvest of each and every farm product, we used to contact the dealers from sales and marketing locally and to markets and to factory and also some to ginnery like cotton and sunflowers for oil production.
THE LAND AND CULTURE
our land is a back cotton soil with agricultural procuction as the leading sector in the country's ecenomic development.
1. It has played a crucial role in creating self- sufficiency in food production.
2. Generating farm employment where 80% of the population live.
3. Stimulating agro- industrial activities by supplying raw materials.
4. Earning foreign exchange through the export of cash crop.
WHAT THE CHILDREN WANT TO BE
Since we are parents of those children and we have trained them on agricultural farming, they also want to continue with what we are doing with them together which is farming.
LAND PREPARATION
- Ploughing and re-ploughing
The first and second ploughing for the land to be into fine tilth to allow easier germination and growth of the seeds and crops respectively.
WEEDING
I intend to spend my loan on purchasing herbicides approximating to 2 litres per five acre i.e 10 litres amounting to $70 and sprayer pump at $30 .Other chemicals for pest and disease control may approximate to around $90.
In my firm, I would also hire human labour of about ten individuals at $5 each totalling to $ 50 .
My overall expenditure on weeding alone is valued at approximately $240 .
PRUNING
Human labour would be required again at the pruning and chemical spray stage for certain crops as kales .Two individuals earning $5 would do this work i.e $10
HARVESTING
Twenty individuals would be enough to pick the tomatoes ,18 individuals to pick cotton. This would approximate to $240
An acre with tomatoes is worth $70 totaling to $700 in ten acres. The use of farm chemicals, spraying machines i applying the chemicals and timely weeding and harvesting due to ready human labour would enhance proper and speedy growth of the crops .This would result into a higher output per unit acre hence higher profits.
