I am called Asumah K. Daniel, from Bongo in the Upper East Region of Ghana. I live in Wenchi in the Brong Ahafo Region of Ghana.
The Municipality is located in the Western part of Brong Ahafo Region of Akanland. It is bounded to the south by Sunyani Municipality and to the north by Kintampo. South district Wenchi town, the Municipal is 56km from Sunyani and 29km from Techiman. It closeness to Techiman, a national Market poses several benefits for agricultural production.
Majority of the people in the Municipality derive their live hoods mainly from the environment thus the land for farming animal husbandry and settlement. Wenchi is connected by roads to Techiman and Sunyani.
I have degree in Economics and entrepreneurship from University of Development Studies. I am currently a teacher in one of the Senior High Schools in the Municipality and I also farm with my small monthly salary and the help of my students.
I do a lot of farming activities; I farm maize, cassava, Yam and Pepper. Currently am into pig production. My interest grew for this as a result of my inability to meet my financial needs and besides to engage myself after school. The money from the operation goes into purchasing livestock and inputs like feed, medicine and construction of the structure for the pigs (Piggeries).
- Pig production is what I do and pigs have one of the highest rates of production in animals, pigs can birth up to 25 off springs at once and that is just one of the things that make pig farming attractive to me. Pigs also grow very fast and pork meat is in huge demand not only Ghana but also in the lakes region because of general improvementof standard of living of the people. Pig farming is very lucrative. I could get up to 200 new piglets in a year and that is a lot of money.
- The company was initially started as a hobby. Considering the prospects of the business and industry as a whole.
- Demand for pork in and around Wenchi is quiet high especially in the suburbs of Techiman, Sunyani, Kintampo, Jema, Wa and Kumasi.
Piggery is the most promising enterprise in the Ghana livestock sector, because it requires little space and relatively small initial capital to start with.
REASONS WHY I INVESTED IN PIG FARMING
- Pigs have low mortality rate as compare to other animals. They can survive days without food or water.
- Pigs are also cheaper to raiseas compared to fish or poultry because they can eat most foods that humans eat and even if you have to buy feed for them, their feed are cheaper than those of other animals.
- Also, you wouldn’t have to worry about thieves since most people would not touch live pigs with a 6-feet pool.
- The immune system of pigs is higher than other animals. As long as you give them the needed vaccines regularly, they would not fall sick.
- Pigs also generate more profit and you ever get tired of pig farming, you could easily get people to buy them.
Which was informed by the persistent and continuous growth in demand for pork? Ghana pig imports have more than tripled in the past year as Ghana’s domestic pig and its product continuous to decline and can only supply about 10 percent of pork demand in the country? This has actually made the business to enjoy fair advantage due to the non-existence of competition in operation. The major threat of business in this venture has to do with rapid increases in prices of its inputs especially feed and medication/vaccines. The possible outbreak of diseases is another threat. Apart from my product being wholesome flexible credit policy is also what keeps my customers to me.
I seek to expand my production capacity and increase output by 70% next year and so it is imperative to keep the business or sound footing as well as my customer base hence the need for the loan. My typical cost is based on the feed which is $60 and other overhead cost of $40. Christmas festivity and other holidays is actually the period I make profit over and above 100%. It actually takes 6 months for the pigs to start giving birth and so I will expand the structure, buy feed medications.
The profit from my business basically goes into reinvestment in growing the business and to support my family. I will also be supporting my students who normally help me in taking care of my animals.
Loan Proposal
This loan when honoured will basically be used to buy feed for the pigs, expansion of the animal structure (Pen). Also to pay a veterinary services and fuel into my motorbike that I will be using in conveying the animals feed and other miscellaneous.
*feed for the pigs $50
*Veterinary services $40
- Purchasing of two months old will be procured from an establishment supplier and each will cost $10 giving a total cost $100.
- Piggery house
The project will construct 2 blocks, the first one will have 10 fattening pens and the second will have 10 fallowing pens plus 2 Boar pens. Each will measure 4x6 feet.
The piggery buildings are estimated to cost $2000, as per bills of quantities given in Annex 2.
Upon injecting this money into the business, it will help me maintain the farm in a correct ration and make more profit. The profit from this will also help me to support in my school. I also expect the profit margin to increase from 40% to 80% averagely.
