Hello, I am William Kairu Wangai and I am passionate about birds. I love keeping them since I was a kid. I would rare chicken and this would help my family get a delicious meal every weekend and in times my parents lacked money they would ask me if we can sell some and the much needed school fees money. This made me realize that chicken is money.
Poultry farming is a vital component of modern agriculture, playing a crucial role in the production of eggs and meat, and contributing significantly to the overall food industry. In Kenya, specifically, Poultry farming holds great importance as Kenya has the largest annual egg production and second largest chicken population in Africa, providing sustenance to a large portion of the population. However, the benefits of poultry farming extend beyond its role in the food supply chain.
As Kenya's population continues to grow, there will be an increasing demand for poultry products. This demographic change is expected to put additional strain on the agricultural sector, which will need to adapt and expand its capabilities to meet the rising need for food. The impending challenge is further compounded by the looming threat of climate change, which poses a significant risk to food security.
In light of these circumstances, it becomes even more crucial to recognize the broader significance of poultry farming. Beyond its immediate contribution to diets through the provision of meat and eggs, it plays a pivotal role in ensuring food security for the growing population. Efforts to support and sustain the poultry industry become paramount, not only for meeting the nutritional needs of the population but also for safeguarding against potential food shortages in the face of climate change.
My hatch chicks and sell to my community as a means of eradicating poverty. They like my services and teachings about poultry farming. I sell my product at a subsidised cost to encourage them farm. I also educate them on the importance of hens in the family as a means of income and provision of nutrition diet. Eggs and meat are very important to people because of the high protein and minerals they provide so it's important to rare chicken for health sake.
Food Security:
According to the World Bank, food security refers to ensuring that every individual in a geographical location has access to the food they want and need in order to lead an active lifestyle. The organization described four main areas to consider in food security: physical availability, economic access, the utilization of food by the body, and stability over a long period of time.
Global warming will heavily affect food security all over the world. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reports that the effects of climate change can already be seen in crop yields such as maize. In the case of livestock, a climate catastrophe would deteriorate the health of animals themselves as well as endanger feed crops. This great risk calls for solutions that can ensure everyone has access to food. It puts significant pressure on the agriculture industry, and makes having livestock like poultry more important than ever.
Health Benefits:
Poultry and eggs are nutrient rich and incredibly healthy to consume. Poultry is a great source of niacin, which improves circulation, selenium to protect against cell damage, phosphorus, and B12 vitamins. Eggs contain choline to help with digestion and brain function, as well as numerous essential vitamins. Along with fish, poultry is also considered the healthiest meats in the market due to its nutritional value, abundance of minerals, and low calories. It is also one of the less expensive types of meat, meaning that more people of different income levels can afford it.
Due to their affordability and nutritional value, eggs are seen as an important vehicle to ensuring all people have access to healthy food. In the case of children specifically, The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) recognized the significance of promoting higher egg consumption and thus initiated a campaign to encourage its increase.
Job Creation
Every year, poultry farming accounts for 6-8% of Kenyas’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), making around 42% of the population involved in poultry farming directly or indirectly. This is because it is an incredibly important industry for Kenyan' diets. With the expected rise in demand in the next few decades, poultry farming must grow even further to increase supply and meet this demand. Therefore, the industry is crucial as it has the potential to create many jobs across the country.
In addition, technology is enabling poultry farmers to take better care of their poultry and monitor it more efficiently. As this technology becomes more widespread, it will ensure that more poultry farmers are able to provide the poultry needed throughout Kenya
