I am a young entrepreneur who is passionate about climate change and poverty alleviation. Having worked with d.light Solar (which is the largest pico solar producer in the world) for 3 years, I took up an opportunity to become one of the brand distributors.
My entrepreneurship journey begun when I was 19 and fresh from high school printing t-shirts to sell to friends. Later, I swung between employment and entrepreneurship failing severally in farming, fishing and forex trading.
My passion for business continued and when I joined d.light I got exposed to a new world of solar and poverty eradication. Every lamp we sold meant lower costs to the customer saved from kerosene and ultimately lower carbon emissions for the world.
So when chance and preparedness collided, I was fortunate to become a distributor for the brand I had grown to love.
As a distributor of d.light solar lamps, I cover a vast geography in Kenya selling between 3,500 to 7,500 solar lamps per month. The business is growing and I hope to grow from the current 4 shops to 13 shops by the close of the year. This will help me reach even more people in far and remote areas whose lives can be changed by switching from using kerosene lamps to using solar lamps. This will also mean increasing my employees from the current 7 to over 20 covering both sales and service issues.
I am seeking financing to help me cover the expanded inventory needs of growing form 4 outlets to 13 outlets. My requirement is USD 5,000 which will be cycled within the business as the trade cycles are short.
All the funds will be applied towards inventory purchase with generated profits ploughed back to support the growing cost structure. This will include rent, salaries and logistics.
Other than growing my business, this injection will allow me to reach 100,000 homesteads who will now have a solar lamp by the end of 2018. I will also provide employment to 9 more shop attendants and 5 more service technicians to support the sales and the service sides of the business.
