I am Echwa Maxwell from Turkana South a place called Kainuk. Turkana is generally arid to semi arid although those of as who live along river Turkwel we do some farming. The place also suffers some resource based conflicts as communities fight over pasture often stealing each others animals across neighboring communities. Interestingly this has a cultural pride despite its often grave consequences.
We are working towards bringing about a mindset change especially among the youth thus I am volunteering in a Norwegian funded project that works through the church to empower young people with alternative livelihoods. I am married with children and also assist in pastoring at my local church
In the recent years, there has been a high increase in the number of people who own motorcycles. there is however insufficient availability of spare parts. I do motorcycle repairs when am not at church or in the youth program. My wife however is at our small kiosk selling motorcycle spares. My costs will involve purchasing the stock from kitale about 150 kilometers to Kainuk Turkana then selling them to those people who come for bike repairs. This is actually kind of value addition. So mu revenue will be both from sales and repairs. The profits will help i and my wife to take care of our family needs as well as pay school fees and increasing our stock with time.
i will increase my stock making spare parts readily available to my clients saving them distance. this will strengthen our family financial security ND provisions.again i will be working with my wife hence breaking traditional barriers limiting women empowerment.
