My name is Pokua Abena. I come from Nsu Hia a village about five kilometers away from Dormaa Ahenkro. I schooled in Dormaa Ahenkro. I attended Roman Catholic primary school and also completed Junior High School in the the same School. I come from a family of three and I happened to be the third born of my parents. My parents were all unemployed who engaged themselves in poultry business but because they held a small capital to run the poultry businesses, they could only produce small amount of eggs to sell. My Senior siblings had the opportunity to further their education to the tertiary level because by the school fees had not gone up like when I decided to continue to the tertiary level. I could only complete Senior High school and I decided to go into apprenticeship so I learned hairdressing. In about three years,I graduated and my father assisted me to put up a store and I bought some items I will use from the few Ghana CEDI's my father gave me. Now I have five apprentices under my care. Dormaa Ahenkro is a municipality that is surrounded by numerous villages who are mostly farmers but basically the main occupation for the area is poultry farming. They real chickens on a large scale to be sold to the cities, that is Kumasi, Accra and sometimes Takoradi. The people in Dormaa Ahenkro are all hardworking and readily accept change. The only thing about some of the youth is that they are engaged in polygamous marriages. I have two children and they all want to be medical doctors in future. I like singing a lot and I sing anytime I attend church service.
I dress hair, polish finger nails and also have a cosmetics attached to my shop where I sell different types of creeks and artificial hairs so that my customers will wonder to looking round for some of these items before the come to my shop. I also weave hairs of different styres. My services are useful and in demand because Dormaa Ahenkro happens to be a big town which now has attain municipality status and surrounding by so may towns and villages and because of that the town is always busy with people doing so many activities. There are all sort of people arround who are government empoyees who will not sit aloof for their hairs to go bad. Many people from nearby villages come to my shop and buy creams and artificial hairs in larger quantities to sell during market days which is held every Tuesday in Dormaa Ahenkro. I decided to go into this business because I studied very well the area and more precisely the kind of business that can attract people. Of course hair do is something one cannot avoid.that is what makes people especially women look more attractive. I invested arround Gh5000 into both the hairdressing and the cosmetics shop. And now I can assume a total capital of Ghc12000. I make sales of about Ghc500 a day including sales from the sales of some of the cosmetics and even more on Tuesdays which is the market day. I use part of the profit realized from the shop to pay my wards school fees, part to reinvest in the business and the remaining to buy food and other miscellaneous.
I will buy the following items. Artificial hair at $30, creams at $40, Shampoo at $35 rollers at $25 and combs at $35. The artificial hair will enable me to get easy access to weaving rather than asking customers to go round looking for their own hairs to buy for their hair styres. I sell the creams to my needy customers to obtain some interest whilst that will make my customers feel at home they have easy access to some of these creams they want. I hope to increase my profit to arronnd 70% if these items are brought into my shop.
