I am a 27 year graduate with a Degree in Arts. I completed my 'A' levels three years ago with no success of an employment. In my life, I've never had it easy. My parents are not learned and hence they didn't have a job either. We had to fend for ourself since childhood and I had it rough.
After graduating, I joined my local market to engage in retail jobs. Broker was my title. I used to be the intermediary between the retailers and the wholesalers. Since then I have been involved in different projects succeeding in some and failing in some. At the moment, I've grown massive experience in managing projects and I want to venture into Poultry farming.
I'd like to venture into Poultry Farming. Poultry industry is a multi-billion shillings industry: The major hindrances to the growth of the industry in Kenya ranges from absence of credit, high interest rate, and high cost of maize, expensive electricity which is important for cold rooms, incubators and operation of automated cages. Because of the following nature of the industry in the country, the prospect is high. Right now the demand for egg, broiler meat, day old chicks, day old poultry etc. remain overwhelmingly high. My plan is to participate in chicken meat production. The business entails keeping of chicken from (Day old) to Ten weeks when the Broiler Chicken will be ready for consumption. The meat is the packed into special packets and transported to the city largest animal produce market- City Market- where they are distributed to customers.
My Vision and Mission is "To produce nutritious meat, generate employment, and create income for sustainability". My Mission is "To Build a mechanized poultry that is efficient and rewarding."
The poultry farm will provide employment in the first year for at least two persons. By five years at full capacity it would employ about 14 persons. Contractors and suppliers will also benefit. Nationally, it will increase the amount of tax raised as I will be in a position to pay tax whether directly or indirectly. Hence, increase in per capita. The banks, insurance companies and Agricultural consulting firms shall all be beneficiaries with the attendant tax going to the government. The investors shall also find a means of expressing their entrepreneurial skills. The manure will service proximal farms and other farms. Egg marketers, maize or feed suppliers, transporters, birds’ meat marketers etc. shall all be affected positively. The impact on the economy will be positive.
The budget will look like this:
Infrastructural cost for Startup for 200 birds.
> Poultry house - (12m*25m) Ksh. 20,000
> Water – Ksh. 10,000
> Transport – Ksh. 20,000
> Electricity for heating the bird's house - 10,000
>Feed to grow – Ksh. 30,000
> Utility – Ksh. 10,000
TOTAL = Ksh. 100,000
An empty room within the farm shall serve as the warehouse for feeds and as depot for the produced meat. Feeds from the company will be truck load. Sales of manure and meat to other farmers and hoteliers will generate additional income and provide the farm with reduced cost. When buyers buy from the farm meat outlet, it reduces visitation to farm which has attendant risk of break of security and biosecurity.
Following the completion of physical structures, Semi-automatic battery cages of premium quality will be purchased and installed in for 2,400 capacity pen. 20 units of 120 birds per unit capacity cages will be utilized to hold at least 2400 birds.
The major material inputs required for the success of this proposed project is a breeding house, Feed (Grower mash), various types of medications when needed and vaccinations according to schedules. The current prices and sources of these inputs are safe, dependable and readily available. With the consumption of 0.5 ton per month of Feed which is the expected requirement for 200-capacity poultry, Poultry will be qualified for 5% discount on prices of Feeds from Coopers.
The market is ready and all the plans are on point. I shall employ a Marketer at full capacity. He would be employed to sell the meat from one meat deport to another/ through the marketing activities, many clientele base shall be created. The customers will be allocated dates. They either pick up the meat from the farm on their dates or have it delivered by us at a price. All customers shall only be given allocation with a confirmation of a payment whether cash or bank payments. To expand the clientele base, advert will be placed on different platforms online.
The projected revenue from the project is mentioned will be around Ksh. 100 per Chick. This sum up to Ksh. 20,000 for the 200 Birds. The revenue projection for the first year in lay is in the figure of Ksh. 20,000 to Ksh. 500,000 from the sales of meat and manure. There is no reasonable profit visible in the first year of the project due to huge investment cost but subsequent recorded reasonable profits.
Once I implement the project I will not only have acquired basic bird rearing skills alone, but I will have acquired money generating projects and skills in poultry keeping. My farm shall be a success. Poultry Farming is a highly developed industry. Its efficacy and productivity is a product of bringing together of all the available industrial facilities, this can never be provided enough by just one individual or company, hence My Farm plans to collaborate with investors and experts. The industry works effectively as a network with different specialization, bringing in diverse inputs. Also, to avoid overcrowding of ideas and thinning of the limited resources, focus will be on egg production for a long time under the supervision of an experienced consulting firm. Success is granted, God being by our side. Nairobi is a large market and strategically located to expand and serve the rest of the nation and beyond.
