I am an IT professional who is also passionate about commmunity transfomation. Key on my transformation agenda is mentoring young people to discover and grow in their God-given abilities and purpose. One way I intend to do this is to create employment opportunities for them. In my free time, when I'm not coding, I'm probably playing a musical instrument, reading a book or working out. I am also a dog lover, and I own a small kennel which at the moments provides employment for one young man. Growing up, my parents instilled in me the value of diligence and hardwork, and I intend to pass this on to others.

Together with a friend, we realized that we have many friends and loved ones that do not have jobs. We realized that much as we may not be in a position to help all of them, we can help as much as we can. We came up with the idea of starting a barber shop. The business is supposed to start at the beginning of 2026, and we hope to have 3 operational stations by the end of the year. We are considering 2 different locations which will informs our capital and operational costs. Our target clients for now are the lower middle class. Below is the breakdown of our tentative budgets.

STARTUPS OPTIONS AND FINANCIALS

A. Low-Cost Setup

Capital Expenses: 110,350 KES

Monthly Operational Expenses: 36,000 KES

Est Revenue: 70,200 KES per month

Profit: 34,200 KES

Breakeven: 3.2 months

B. Medium-Range Setup

Capital Expenses: 212,450 KES

Monthly Operational Expenses: 82,000 KES

Revenue (est.): 218,400 KES/month

Profit: 136,400 KES

Breakeven: 1.6 months.

The goal of this proposal is to raise part of the capital which will go into the rent deposit and one month rent. Monthly rent is estimated at 15,000 KES, hence together with deposit will require a total of 30,000 KES.

My previous project was a barbershop with a strong focus on professionalism, hygiene and record automation and expense tracking through a custom-built software I designed myself. Because of a faulty laptop requiring repair, the system is underutilized and I would want to effect that. At the same time, though the business is on track, it has not broken even since only one of the 3 stations is operational at the moment. This has been occassioned by challenges in acquiring barbers that can consistently deliver services and attract clients. The current barber is overwhelmed as he has to work extra to take care of the overhead costs.

To address the income instability during this growth phase, I am introducing a small-scale poultry project to provide both household sustencance and supplementary income.

I have the following goals:

1. To repair the work laptop and operationalize the business tracking system (which I can also outsource to other businesses for an extra cent)

2. Activate additional barber stations by recruiting and supporting reliable staff (This is work in progress, and doesn't depend directly on the loan as I need patience to get the best fit - but I need a financial buffer during the waiting period)

3. Establish a poultry project (20 layers) for egg production

4. Generate consistent income to support loan repayment and business operations

The business will, therefore, be implemented in two key components

1. Business stabilization - repair the laptop to restore automated record keeping and enhance operational efficiency and financial tracking

2. Poultry farming - Purchase 20 laying hens, provide basic housing, feeding and healthcare. This will serve as a financial buffer, ensuring consistent cash flow even when there are fluctuations in the barbershop business.

Budget breakdown

1. Laptop repair - 16,000 KES

2. 20 layer chickens @500 KES - 10,000 KES

3. Poultry Housing (materials and setup - I will do construction myself with the help of a friend) -6,000 KES

4. Feeds, initial stock - 6,000 KES

5. Vaccines and Veterinary care - 2,000 KES

6. Miscellaneous (transport, equipment, contigency) 5,000 KES

Total - 45,000 KES

Expected outcomes:

1. A fully functional digital system for tracking business performance for both the kinyozi and chicken project. This will also be outsourced to other small businesses for an extra income in subscription costs.

2. Increased revenue from additional barber stations

3. Daily egg production (estimated 12-16 eggs daily) and supplemental income from eggs

4. Improved financial stability and ability to service loan

Sustainability

The kinyozi business is designed for long-term growth with scalable systems and standardized service delivery. The poultry project provides immediate and consistent returns, ensuring resilience during the scaling phase.
