I was born and raised up in Kisii county. I went to schools in the same county both my primary and secondary education. Life was so hard and i had rough moments with the school management because i could not pay fees on time and sometimes i used to stay out of school for half a term.
But i thank God that when i did my high school exams i passed and joined university. I trained a s a teacher and taught in high school for several years before joining the Ministry of Commerce where i am a business advisor.
I recently bought a farm and want to start rearing chicken on the farm. I have attended a seminar on intensive farming and my burning desire is to maximize the land and get the most out of it. So i have lined up a number of viable projects starting with local improved chicken farming for both eggs and meat. I have chosen this project because it is easy to start and manage. I will like to start with 300 chicks in the next one month.
The next project is rabbit farming which i will like to start after six months of the first project followed by pig farming by the end of next year.
Land in my county is small holder farms and the best one can do is intensive farming and applying the best management practices. One of my sons wants to be an agricultural expert and he loves my proposed venture. However, i normally tell my children to follow their hearts. let them choose what they love. When training entrepreneurs i always insist that they do what they love most and the same applies to my kids.
I have been keeping local chicken before i joined my current employer, and i used to sell and pay school fees for my son in primary. I love it and gained a lot experience needed to rear chicken. I can raise a one day old chick successfully.
I want to rear poultry and keep locally improved chicken from Kenya Agricultural Research Institute. I will sell eggs and meat. In the next six months they will start laying eggs and research shows that they lay up to 85% per day. Local chicken eggs are in high demand and highly valued especially by bakeries that make cakes and other confectioneries, while local chicken meat is really regarded as a delicacy. The demand is so big and most hotels are looking for these products.
Since this is a start up i will repay the first two loans from my salary.
I love chicken farming because it is my passion and they are cheaper to keep and they are in great demand. I already have a market for these products.
The typical costs for my project include structure for my upward of 600 birds, Cost of buying chicks and chick marsh, and disease management, cost of buying egg crates and labor among others. My revenue will come from sale of eggs and meat.
I will use the profits to repay loans, save and expand the poultry project, start the rabbit rearing and then pig farming. The rest of the profits i will use in improving living standards of my family.
Last week i bought 300 chicks that are in the brooder doing very well.
I bought 300 chicks of improved local breeds and chick marsh. The cost of the chicks was 300 dollars and the feeds will be close to 150 Dollars. I will buy the feeds using my own savings. That is why i delayed in reapplying for the loan. This project will change my life since this will be the first big step towards a commercial poultry farming that i have been longing for. I expect in 6 months from the time of stocking chicks to start collecting 85% of eggs per day and this will give me a gross income of 765 dollars per month. I will also be able to create jobs and improve health among my people.
I intend to use this loan to buy feeds and vaccines. I have already constructed a 1000 capacity house for the birds. I also intend to continuously stock the birds to the tune of 1000 birds.
