My name is Acquah Mensah I live in a superb of Kumasi the second capital of Ghana typically known as the garden city of West Africa. I live with my parents and siblings. My childhood was a fantastic one and my childhood education too was good. My father had a vision in education and he thought it wise to have all of us educated.
I was good in class and I was the assistant class prefect. I was good in mathematics and I remember I used to tell my friends that I will be a great mathematician one day. I love to do business mathematics so my interest in being a business tycoon in future. I went to Kumasi Polytechnic and I offered business. After my national service I found it difficult to get job. I wrote several and numerous letters but all to no avail. Things became so that I couldn't bare. I was after I started my own work that things became normal for me.
I started my own work by taking a loan from one local bank called Abosomakotere from our area. I used to save there that enable to get a loan from them to establish my own business since I could be employed in either the Government or the private sector.
The culture of the people is very unique they have a deep respect for their tradition. They have a lot of tourist sites and festivals. The food they like best is fufuo a food made by cassava.
My children wants to be doctors, nurses and lawyers.
My favourite game used to be oware. Which is a local game played by the northerners from the northern part of Ghana. It is a wooden device with some holes in it. You play it by putting dried fruit in each of the holes. 4 balls each in a hole. It is hard to describe but it is an interesting game and people like it.
I sell different types of soaps, candles, mosquito repellent, biscuits. In my shop I several goods and variety of stationary goods such as books, pencils, math set exercise and many more including household ingredients my own is a mix up. The goods are in high demand. I live close a church and a school so students from the school patronize my goods and the people from nearby also buys my goods. I sometimes supply some schools with examination papers such as A4 sheets for their exams.
I chose this kind of business because it is easy to operate and you don't need any school certificate in order to operate. The ordeal that I went through looking for unavailable jobs I didn't want to go through the same thing. At least I am getting something that I can depend on.
The typical cost of some of these items is not costly. A box of soap cost around GH40.00, a box of biscuits cost around GH30.00 and several others. The revenue I get is good it is the one sustaining me now. I depend solely on the profit. I sometimes gets profit around GH¢300.00 after weakly sales. So during the month I get around GH500.00 but during the market days people do patronize my goods a lot.
I am seriously saving the revenue I get I am seriously looking for avenue to do my master in my field. I love education and I will like to continue my education I am still young. And I used to other part of the revenue to take of myself and other activities such as paying water and light bills and also pay my shop rent to my landlord.
I will use the money that will be given to me to buy the following products to help augment those I already have in my shop:
A box of key soap bar $10
A box of Big pens which is $15
Ledger Note books which is high demand $20
It will help increase my stock. I intend to open a big shop in the future and it will also help the customers who patronize my goods which will reduce the cost of traveling long distances to buy the same products.
It will help me increase my profit from GH400 to GH600 per week of sales.
