At this point I moved to butere town centre with my brother and was taken to a training college for tailoring. I was then employed as a tailor by someone who had a tailor shop and was earning 2500 KSH per month. I was married in 1998 and became a housewife. I now have four children, my first born is 14 and my last born is 3 months old. I have continued my tailoring business from my house. I have a very good relationship with the community here in butere. If I didn't have that relationship with my customers it would be impossible for my business to run. I want to use my ties to the community and my experiences to fulfill my dream of making a better life and to educating my children.
My business is making clothes and furniture covers for people in the community. I started the business in 2012 because I had been trained in tailoring and it was the only business idea I was very sure of. My biggest challenge is that sometimes I lack the materials I need. Often, people ask me to make them a dress but I lack the materials to make it. The strengths of my business is that I know many people in the community and therefore have a large customer base. I have customers from within butere, but also others from outside the slum.
My goal for my business is that in the next few years my business will grow so that I can expand it and employ others to help with the tailoring. I am very proud of my business because it provides enough money to cover my children's school fees in addition to helping to provide for my family.
I need a loan so that I can buy more materials for my business. I want to buy thread, fabric, needles and lining. The cheapest material I can buy is 150 KSH per meter, and I use 10 meters per dress. There are also materials for 500KSH and 350KSH per meter. I would like to buy the higher quality materials so that I can make more profit. With a loan I will be able to make more dresses that I can then sell. I predict I'll be able to sell double what I am selling now, resulting in much more profit for my household.
The profit I will get from the loan will allow me to save and reinvest in the business. By saving and reinvesting my profits I will eventually be able to purchase a new sewing machine, which will allow me to expand even faster. At the same time, I can use some of the income to improve my family's life because I'll be able to educate my children.
