Am brian gideyi aged 23 currently living in kitale, I spent my childhood days in vihiga county. I have complited my education at the university level having a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics and rural development. hardships in my life I overcame through prayer and determination.
farming business was being done by my parents to raise fees so I became interested. I live in the bukusu culture of the luhya people who are unique with their style of circumsions harbouring a good market for agricultural products during this season. currently am not married and during my leisure times I like watching football and playing pool.
I produce maize and beans on small scale, this products are useful in providing food security. I chose this kind of business because of passion and maize is staple food in Kenya hence its demand is high. I cultivate beans too for food too alongside its ability to improve soil through nitrogen fixing. In my half an acre holding am the source of labour, my production cost was 15$ for 25kg DAP for planting, 13$ for CAN for topdressing, I intend to get 12-15 bags of shelled grains which has a value of about 28.8$-36$. my profits will be for my masters degree fees.
harvesting time is nearing and with the 1050 shillings I will be able to seek for labour to stake my ½acre in two weeks time.I have been the main source of labour on my farm but am committed elsewhere at the moment. this will ensure that my produce is harvested on time hence preserving quality. staking of maize is quite important to allow the cobs to dry in readiness for shelling and secondly to prevent the grains to be destroyed by the ongoing rains in the country. for small scale farmers staking also paves some space for the land to be put to maximum use eg. planting vegetables for the short season
