My name is Alberta Mensah and I come from the Ashanti Region of Ghana. I attended my junior high school and senior high school in Accra. I have stayed in Accra all my life. I come from a family of three. My elderly brother, myself, my younger sister, and my parents. I stay in Tema with my aunt and her husband together with my younger sister. She is in her second year in the senior high school studying business as her course. I went to a vocational school after my senior high school, to study sewing. After that I went to 'Perrisea beads' to study how to make handmade bags, shoes, belts, table covers, and slippers. I have learnt to fend for myself the hard way and it has really gone a long way to help shape up my life for the better.
I am currently working with Perrisea beads at Tema community four. We are into the making of handmade bags, shoes, belts, earrings and necklaces. We also travel most of the time to trade fairs in Accra and out of Accra as well as other neighbouring countries in Ghana. Whenever it is time to go for a trade fair, we produce lots of the bags as well as purses, shoes, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. I go to work at 8am and close at 3pm. Most of the time after work I visit shops, hospitals, and friends at their homes to market and sell some of the items we produce to them. Some nurses have also been coming to our work place to buy some of the handmade purses to sell to their colleague nurses. I also distribute these items to beauty saloons since lots of ladies visit saloons most of the time.
I have been into the business of producing handmade bags for about 5 years now. It has really been a wonderful experience especially on trade fairs when we go to to other cities and countries. I have got some nurses form Port Clinic and Lagoon Clinic who have shown great interest in the hand made bags and purses. They have requested for 20 bags, each with its purse and bangle. I have been able to save some money from my monthly salary to start the work but then I need an extra $115 to get all the nessary materials to finish up the work. These are some of the orders I have been getting aside my salary to take care of my younger sister. I have a vision of putting up a decoration school where the youth would come and learn how to do decoration in room, at wedding ceremonies, and also learn how make these handmade bags and purses. I know with your great help I would be able to achieve this in order to also create employment form the youth in my community and beyond. Thank you
