I am 35 years old and a mother of three children. I come from an area that most of the people depend on farming as their livelihood. I have attained eduction up to the secondary level and due to financial challenges didn't attend college. I was determined to attend college and I therefore started some income generating activities to raise money for college. I learnt to make clothes and garments in a local polytechnic and after completing the training I begun my own business. People in my area love farming, especially tea farming. The area is close to the forest and you will find wild animals such as elephants. My children want to be great people in future. One of my daughters is currently at the University studying bachelor of education and aspire to be a lecturer. The other one is in high school and the last-born is in elementary level.I take my work as a hobby and I use most of my pastime with my children and family.
My main business is making clothes but I also sell second hand clothes. At this time of the year when school are opening and new pupils are joining school, demand for clothes (especially school uniforms) is high. I chose the business out of passion and I have trained in this profession. My income averages about Ksh 130,000.The main costs of the business include rent for the premises (KES 7000), and the costs of materials which vary with the garment I am sewing.I use the profits to grow the business as well as to pay school fees fro my children.Because, sometimes business is low and I have to make money, I also do farming.I have some tea bushes that I inherited from my father. The tea farming activities brings about Ksh 40,000. The main costs involved are fertilizer and labour.
I will use the money to purchase a used sewing machine (yet in perfect condition) being sold at $110 (Ksh 10,000). The current machine I have is ageing and has broken down severally, which reduces the efficiency of my work. I will pay the loan promptly since I will be getting some income from my tea farming activity. The loan will be very helpful because a new machine will help improve the efficiency of my service provision to my customers .
