I am a renowned businessman in Kiptangwanyi shopping center which is about forty three kilometers from Nakuru town. I was born in Rongai town where I attended my elementary school and later my parents and the whole family we relocated to Kiptangwanyi. This is where I completed my secondary education at Muriricua Secondary school. After school, I attended Baraka Agricultural Training institute where I got a certificate in farm management and crop production having studied there for two and a half years. I went back at home and I started practising intensive agriculture. I later started buying maize and beans. Slowly by slowly the business grew and now I am able to purchase cereals in large quantities and sell them to wholesalers at wholesale price. I am married with three children who are all in school. I rely so much on the business in order to cater for my family needs as well as educating my children. I live in my own piece of land plot number 1263. I intend to improve this business more as it is a good source of livelihood to me and to my family as well.
My business entails purchasing and selling of cereals from the farmers to the wholesalers and other retailers at wholesale. I started this business in the year 1999 and have been doing it since then. My family assist me in purchasing the products. The months of January up to march are good for the business. This is because the demand is usually higher than the supply. I sell the maize and beans that I have already stored at this time. Kiptangwanyi is usually at a strategic position and is usually surrounded by high potential areas. I therefore take the opportunity of storing the grains when people are harvesting and store them for resale at a later time. I have been trying to introduce other grains such as soya beans and wheat in my business and slowly people are now asking for them. This means that there is a high potential for these commodities. The main challenges that this business encounter are poor roads and especially during the rainy and dry season, and droughts which affects the productivity of the area.
Am grateful for such an opportunity to be funded by Zidisha micro-finance. I will use my loan that I will receive to expand my cereals business by doing the following. Firstly, I will release some twenty bags of beans that i was storing into the market especially in Nakuru town. This money will be used for transportation and the remaining amount, I will purchase maize which I will sell during the months of May to August.
