About Me

We are residents of Tabalak Commune situated 50 km to the east of Tahoua. We are Tuareg artisans. My parents wer nomads but after their tribe died during the drought of 1980 they settled and made jewelry in a commune. I am an artisan. My education is limited to primary school. It was necessary for me to start business so I could not go to school. I make jewelry. The profit from selling jewelry permits me to be financially independent and I take care of both myself and my family.

I'm very disappointed that you seem to have stopped repaying entirely. Is something wrong? Could you resume repayments please? Thanks! Astrid

Hello fellow lenders - as a virtual volunteer for Zidisha, I was able to look up Zidisha's contact history with Mr. Mala about his loan. He was most recently contacted by telephone on Oct. 17th. He is travelling outside of Niger, and trying to make arrangments for repayment long distance.

Is there any news about this loan? Is there still trouble with the banks?

    Dear lenders,
My name is Mien, I am Client Relationship Manager for Zidisha in West-Africa. You may have been wondering why this loan, that has been fully financed since a while and also has been accepted by the borrower, has not been disbursed yet. Since one month we have been negotiating with our partner bank in Niger about free disbursement of our loans. The bank has charged us 11900 FCFA (23,60 USD) for each of the first disbursements we did in Niger. It is clear that Zidisha can't accept such fees and we don't want our borrowers to pay them either. Negotiations go on and may result in the decision to start a partnership with a new bank in Niger. We hope to find a solution during the next few days, in order to disburse this and all the other loans in Niger, and in order to guarantee the future development of our Niger program.
Thank you very much for your patience and understanding.

      Hello Mien,

It appears the partner bank is more interested in gouging the borrowers than looking at the bigger picture, ie, helping build their local communities.

I wonder if there is a way to 'go primitive' and send cash equivalents directly to a disbursing agent for physical distribution of funds?
But then collection of repayments might be a problem for the borrowers?
      Have other options been suggested?
Honestly, I'd rather give the money to borrowers with no repayment than support a short-sighted bank's greed.
      Thoughts?

        Hi mewesten,
I certainly share your analysis about the bank completely missing the bigger picture. One month of negotiations made me very much aware of the fact that their bureaucracy and lack of customer service is unbelievable. I am afraid though that Zidisha can't start working with disbursing agents, because that would contradict our policy of working without intermediaries. We have started negotiations with other banks now and hope to find one with a more entrepreneurial and humanitarian vision, as we have found them in other countries. In the meantime we also found out that quite a lot of the current borrowers have their personal account at the original partner bank. If funds can be transferred without fees from the Zidisha account to the accounts of individuals that may be a short term solution for the loans that have already been funded in Niger.

Thank you Mien -- your quick response surprised me -- thanks!
I have experienced "bureaucracy and lack of customer service" at US banks also, so the problem is not a unique one.
I will post your reply above for information on the Athiest group thread, as it's likely some of those members have made loans affected by the bank disbursement fee issue.
For the sake of the waiting borrowers, I hope your possible short term solution works.
