Having cleared secondary school and and no money from my parents to attend college where I wanted to be a teacher, I resorted to doing small businesses of selling vegetables and groceries at the local market over the many years.
In 2009, I got sponsorship from my elder brother who paid my fees to study Certificate in Early Childhood Development Education(ECDE) and I graduated in 2010. During the course, one is expected to be attached to a school during college breaks to get first hand experience and file a report when the college reopens over the semester.
When I could not find a school after two weeks of searching, I decided to start teaching my 3 kids from my house, and within one week of doing so, my three neighbours brought in their kids so I could also teach them.
That is how I started out in running Baraka Light Academy. I eventually graduated from college in Dec 2010.
My school is called Baraka Light Academy (Baraka means blessed) and has KG1, KG2 and KG3 for kids aged 3-6yrs and then class 1-5 for lower primary education. I started out with as little as 7 kids and now the school has a total of over 130 children.
The school is located in a densely populated estate in Jomvu hence there are many children the age of attending school. We only have 4 schools in the area one of which is a public school. These schools are not able to sufficiently admit all kids from these estate. Also with perennial strikes in Kenya over the last two decades because of poor pay, many parents prefer taking their children to private schools where there is minimum or no interruptions over the school calendar
I plan to buy text books for classes 3-5 to be used in class for reference purposes. I will buy atleast two books per subject/unit. This will have a direct positive impact on the performance of the kids.
I also plan to buy stationery eg photocopy paper, pencils, pens and chalk.
