I am Gladys Wangechi, born in Nyeri county of Kenya. I am a trained teacher teaching in a local secondary school. I also do farming as a side business to supplement my salary, which is not enough to cater for all the family needs.
I am married with two children, aged 5 and 7 years old. My husband works in another city where he operates a taxi business.
I do modern farming where I grow tomatoes in a greenhouse. I started this project three years ago after undergoing training, which was conducted by an NGO that advocates for self-reliance.
It has been a wonderful experience since my land, which had been bare for many years, can now produce healthy tomatoes for family consumption and also for sale. I make about 1,500 USD per year from the sale of these tomatoes. I have plans to diversify to more crops like strawberries in the near future.
If I am successful in getting this loan, I will use the money to improve my farming greenhouse activities. The main problem with greenhouse farming is pollination, which does not occur naturally since it is an enclosed environment. I normally hire an beehive full of bees during the pollination stage. This costs me about 10 USD and eats on my net profit, not to mention sometimes I have to wait for the next available bees, since their demand is quite high.
To buy an occupied bee hive (with sting-less bees) will cost me USD 75. I am expecting to harvest honey from these bees as a bonus, and I am very excited about this new venture.
Kindly fund my loan.
