My names are shadrack njihia and i currently live in githurai in Nairobi Kenya. I'm a graduate in diploma in social work and community development in 2010. I'm the third in a family of three and also the last born. after competing my studies, I embarked on a job searching journey though i was not lucky to secure one in these tough economic times. it was after a long search for a formal job that i thought about starting a business so as to be able to support myself financially. i decided to venture into the recycling industry where by I started buying waste scrap plastic cans and reselling them to industries that recycle them. Because I'm selling these plastic to the buyers in their raw form, I’ve not been making much of a profit financially. Through zidisha loan, I'm hoping to buy a shredding machine that will enable me to shred the plastic containers into smaller powdery form that fetch more when selling. Through recycling, in regard to the world wide drive toward keeping the environment unpolluted and clean, I feel I'm making an impact in the environment because plastics do not decompose naturally. This business helps in keeping the environment clean and also helps me financially. Through the proceeds I get from this business, I'm able to meet my daily needs though I feel I have the potential to do more if I have more solid financial base.
My business is located in Githurai 44 estate in the capital of Kenya Nairobi. Started in 2011, it involves collecting and buying of waste and used plastic containers, sorting them and finally selling them to the industrial recyclers who latter on recycle them. Through this recycling cycle, I help in keeping the environment clean from plastic waste which would be otherwise littered all over. I have also been able to cater for my daily needs through the proceeds that I get though not much. Through zidisha, I hope to be able to expand my business because the lack of finances limits me to only buying little quantities and thus greatly reducing the proceeds.
Being an entrepreneur involved in the well being of the environment, I am tied down to the fact that I have to sell the plastic containers to other traders who have shredding machines who shred the containers and sell them at higher prices. With the little savings that I have managed to save and the loan I will get from Zidisha, I will buy a shredding machine that will allow me to shred the plastics myself and to sell them at higher and better prices thus raising and expanding my business and also helping in conserving the environment more.
