About Me

My name is Agnes Nthenya. I was born and brought up in a family of six and I am the first born. I live in a deep rural area where I do farming for a living. The area depends on rain-fed agriculture, but it has a semi-arid climate so the produce is normally very poor.

I am married with three children and my husband works in a faraway city - Mombasa - where he went six years ago to look for a job. He is the one who introduced me to Zidisha. After my secondary school, I went into farming and that is what I am still doing on my small piece of land. I produce maize and beans for feeding the family, and when the produce is good I sell the surplus to the market.

My Business

I am a small-scale farmer and my farming is mostly for feeding my family. As I mentioned above, I live in a semi-arid area and we experience a lot of crop failure due to inadequate rainfall. I normally plant fast-maturing crop varieties to cope with this challenge, but sometimes the plants don't mature fast enough before the dry spell destroys them. It is a tough life and, when this happens, I have to depend on my husband, who runs a small business in Mombasa city.

I also own four goats and a cow and they produce milk, again for the family. The greatest challenge I face is water, because I normally get it from a borehole, which is about three kilometers away. I carry the water in 20-liter containers and I use my bare back to carry the water home. This is tedious and I make several trips to fetch enough water for the family consumption and also for the animals.

Loan Proposal

I will buy a 90-kg bag of table sugar at $100. I will then buy maize and wheat flour at $40 and $30. These are items which are used by every house hold in my area and they are always in high demand. for these items and I am optimistic that I will sell them within a short time and make some good profit.

This will add to what I am already making from the grocery shop and bring me closer to my financial independence that I so much desire.

Thank you.
