My name is Daniel Chege. I was born and raised in Nyandarua county in central highlands of Kenya. This is an area known for pyrethrum production as well as other food crops such as Irish potatoes and horticultural produce.
I was born in a very rural area where we lived a simple life with not luxuries whatsoever. I was educated up to secondary school but I could not proceed to college due to limited spaces available in those institutions. After staying at home for a few years, I decided to go to Mombasa to live with my uncle while at the same time looking for gainful employment.
While in Mombasa, I got acquainted with a number of photographers and I used them to learn how the business is done. With help of my uncle I bought my first film camera which I used to take photographs in the estates and during social events. With time, my clientele grew and I decided to venture into video business to supplement my income. I bought my first video camera which I am still using to shoot video footages for different occasions.
I run my business from the famous monument in Mombasa called Fort Jesus which is a tourist attraction site. This place is frequented by many local and international tourist hence my reason to operate from there.
I am a freelance photographer and some people call the work I do paparazzi. In Kenya, the term paparazzi refer to a cameraman who takes photos without a contract with the host.
We take a risk of taking photos hoping that the subjects will like and buy them especially in social events such as weddings and school functions. This arrangement works well most of the time but I do make losses at times.
I occasionally get contracts to cover weddings and corporate functions. I make about $200 per month from this business and this goes to supporting my family of one wife and one child who is now 1 year old.
I am still stuck with my first camera which is now 7 years old. It records using analog technology and this produces fuzzy footage due to low quality. This gives my competitors an edge and I want to use money from this loan to buy a modern digital capable of recording a much better quality work. The camera I have in mind will cost me around $250. I have saved $170 so this loan will suffice to accomplish my goal.
The acquisition of this camera will boost my confidence and enable me to cover big events. This means more revenue and more opportunities for my business.
