About Me
My name is Dennis Kinuthia. I was born in Muranga County not very far from the capital city of Nairobi. I was born in a farming community where I learnt the farming skills early in life and I spent most of my childhood (when not in school) tending my parents small parcel of land.
I went to primary and secondary school and later joined a technical college where I did a course in electrical installation. I was hoping to get a good job after completing my course but this did not happen. I resorted to touting, where I was employed as bus conductor the work that I still do once in a while.
With the saving from my transport employment, I managed to start a store for selling charcoal and I am still doing the same.
My Business
I deal with selling of charcoal . About half of Mombasa residents use this form of fuel since it is affordable and can be bought in small quantities. The business is tightly controlled by the government and the charcoal dealers are only allowed to cut trees such as casuarina which mature very fast for making charcoal.
I buy a sackful of charcoal for about $5 and then sell in small quantities like 1kg, 5kgs etc. One sack can fetch a profit of about $3 but about $1 if for transport and other miscellaneous costs.
On average, I make a net profit of about $70 per week which I use expand this business and also for supporting my extended family back home.
Loan Proposal
If given this money, I will put all of it into buying an extra sack of charcoal I will use the loan as an entry point into Zidisha system since almost all of it will go to registration and the loan fund. The balance will be enough to buy just one sack of charcoal.
I hope to get a bigger loan once I clear this first one and that is the time I will be able to boost my business in a big way.
