About Me

My name is David Kinyua a father of two adult children. I live in Mombasa city but I was born in brought up in Nyahururu which is about 700 kilometers from Mombasa. My parents, like those around them were farmers and I learned farming skills early in life and I got very much interested in agriculture - both crop and animal farming.

I got my first job in Mombasa at a post office where I am still working. Due to my huge interest in farming, I purchased a piece of land in the outskirts of the town and this is where I do my farming activities. I grow maize which does very well in this area and I am a proud owner of three dairy cows.

I have an assistant who takes care of the farm together with my wife. We consume some of the produce and sell the rest to supplement my income.

My Business

I started farming as soon as I settled in Mombasa. Mombasa is a holiday town and the local residents found it very strange that I could engage myself in this area since it was unheard of. However, for me it was an opportunity to fill the gap that was missing and this was an instant success.

My main income from is from sale of milk which I deliver to the hotels in town. The farm inputs are quite expensive but I make a net income of about $3500 per year from my farm. I am hoping to go full swing and expand my farm when I go for retirement from my formal job in a few years to come.

Loan Proposal

I do my farming in area where water is scarce. Mine is rain fed agriculture and water is always the limiting factor in our farming. I mostly depend on borehole water to feed the cows but they dry out during long dry spells. We resort to buying water from vendors during such times and this is an unreliable supply and very expensive.

I given this money, I will use it to buy a water reservoir with I will use to harvest rain water. I will then use this water when the boreholes dry up. This will ensure that my cows will have safe and sufficient drinking water even during the dry spells.

This project will cost me about $250 and I will finance it partly from my savings and the rest from this loan.
