About Me

I was born in 1989 in Ilala sub-location of Kakamega district. I successfully went through my primary education and later joined secondary school, which I however did not complete due to lack of school fees. I later joined a tailoring school where I learnt dressmaking. I later got married to Paul Ndalo a native of Kisumu North district, Bar B sub-location with whom I have one daughter named Valary Lizzy. Given that both my in law parents have passed on, life has not been so easy for me and the family. This is also coupled with the fact that my spouse is not in any formal employment where income is guaranteed. As a result we depend mainly on peasant farming for food security and the improved cookstoves business for economic security.
The business has brought peace and happiness to my family since I can nowadays contribute towards the household expenses without depending on my husband. In fact, I can nowadays assist my husband when he is low financially. Although the business has been very useful to my family, it has not been big enough to generate income that is enough to support the five orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) under my care. I never thought that this business would grow, expand and diversify to a level that it will be able to adequately provide for the OVCs so that they may have a better future. This is really happening now. I have managed to put up a business and sustain the business this far; since 2010.

My Business

Afande Clay Works is my business that deals in making and selling of energy saving cookstoves out of clay. Specifically, it specializes in the production of KCJ liners in a moderate scale. The clay business was started in 2013 after a training I attended that was supported by the OKOA KUNI Project funded by the European Union through the Community Development Trust Fund. The interest to attend the training came out of my admiration for the community members who were involved in the ICS business. They were making money and found ease in supporting their families. At the beginning, clay molding and liner production appeared tough. However, after trying; it turned out to be a simple, interesting and easy job.
In a good month I make profits of upto $ 160 which I use to expand the business more and cater for my family needs. The business is currently constrained by inadequacy of space, especially for curing of liners. This has limited the production capacity. I however look forward to getting financial support that would one day enable me construct a more spacious structure for curing of green liners

Loan Proposal

The loan will be used to buy metal claddings, vermiculite, paint and cement which I will use to assemble and sell complete cookstoves. Together with my savings this will cost me around Ksh. 15000 This will increase my profit per unit of each stove I shall sell by Ksh. 300. This will thus increase my profit per month by a further Ksh.18,000 which I hope to get by selling to more customers. The additional income generated will help me feed my family and enable me to provide for the orphans under my care.
