My name is Ruth Achieng’Owuor, am 38years old female Kenyan. I was born in Usenge Sub-Location, West Yimbo Ward, Bondo Constituency, and Siaya County. I am a born again Christian, a businesswoman, a wife, and a mother. I attended my primary Education in the village in the 80’s, but never proceeded beyond class eight. I got married in 1995, and am blessed with six children (four boys and two girls). Currently, I stay with my family in Nairobi, where I operate a small business, to supplement the family income.
Since I got married at a tender age, I joined women group’s where I made small savings that later I used to start a food Kiosk in 1998. Two years later I relocated to fish trading since I am more conversant with fish products as I come from the lakeside. This business has transformed my family as am able to support my husband in meeting family chores. As with any business there are challenges such as, stiff competition, bad weather and storage facility. I believe Zidisha will help me alienate some of these limitations if not all.
The earnings from this business are good as many city residents love taking fish in their daily meals. On an average I earn $1065 per month, I then settle my bills totaling to $563. This leaves me with a net profit of $502 I re-invest 20% $100 in the business, 10% ($ 50) for my personal savings, and 5 %($25) for insurance,. The balance I use to support my family (School fee, clothing, and food).
Thank you for activating my profile, as a business woman I want to work extra herder to improve my lifestyle. However i have bigger challenge in lightening my place of business as i open very early 0500hrs and close 2000hrs. and due to unreliable electricity which often goes off, sometimes i use spotlight which does not give better results. I therefore want to buy a solar lamp with three bulbs, this will enable me serve my customers without fear of darkness. The solar lamp costs $165, so I will top -up with my savings. Since the lamp is portable it will also help my children in studying when I have closed the business.
