    Hi everyone,

My name is Miriam and I'm a Client Relationship Manager for Zidisha based in Dakar. I had the pleasure of meeting with Khadi earlier this week and I wanted to give an update on her, her business, and what she has been able to do with her current loan.

Khadi lives in Castor, a neighborhood of Dakar, near a large busy market. She met me at the edge of the market and led me to her house through bustling streets crowded with vendors selling fish, fresh vegetables, and peanuts, with boutiques set back from the road offering anything from food products to fabric. On both the way to and from her house Khadi greeted many people on the street with traditional Wolof greetings, asking about their day, their family, their job, etc.

Khadi's current loan with Zidisha has allowed her to continue her work in commerce and agriculture. She buys products in bulk, like dried fish, and sells them in the central market. Khadi got involved in commerce when she found herself unemployed despite completing her studies. Her sister who lives in the south of the country sent her a large amount of wheat to sell, though Khadi knew nothing about the business. Still, she divided the wheat into smaller bags and was able to sell it to another sister's colleagues. Now she has been in the business for over 15 years and is very successful, selling a variety of products.

Khadi was also able to get involved in agriculture. Her loan allowed her plant large fields in the south of the country. Since Khadi lives in Dakar, her family in the south takes care of the fields when she is not there. Her peanut crop was very successful, but Khadi has found that agriculture is a riskier business because she has to depend on the rain which is not always guaranteed. Additionally Khadi suffered major losses when cows ate her entire corn crop, located on 3 1/2 hectares of land. She unfortunately wasn't able to salvage any of it. But Khadi is very business savvy and her profits from her peanut sales have been enough to cover her losses. She is already planning on investing in barbed wire before planting again.

Khadi's peanut crop yielded 17 large bags and she has already sold 16 of them. She showed me the last bag that she has kept for her family to enjoy, obviously proud of her work but extremely humble as well. Khadi is excited to continue working with Zidisha after she finishes repaying her loan.

Hello dear lenders, my apologies for not making comments, I send you my best wishes for the year 2014. I was in the south of Senegal (Velingara) to see to my fields. I planted peanuts and corn. The peanuts came through, but the corn did not. I did not make a profit but I will try (farming) again in the month of June; I used the loan from last year to cultivate my fields. I have a few photos of when I was bagging the peanuts that I will publish next time. I keep my business it is my favoured activity.

Hi Dear lenders this is Khadi diallo. First off, I would like to thank you so much for waving the repayment of my loan. I was so happy. I met with the Zidisha’s intern last week who told me the good news. I am planning on continuing business with that money and I do have more projects in mind. My wish is to invest this money and make more money out of it. My business is slow right now because of winter. There are very little fish products because it’s raining a lot. Actually in the Casamance were my products are coming from, there is little dry fish. I am hoping within the next 3 months to have my business running at a normal rhythm for the seafood products. In my last comment I talked about my wish to work in the agricultural fields and I am still thinking about it. For now I am preparing myself for next year but for now my business is my main focus. Right now I receive dry fish packages monthly and the weight and size are not interesting. In the past I would get 350 to 450 KG of dry fish but last month I was only able to get 133kg. Now the price per kilo for dry fish is more expensive than ever. I am saying goodbye for now thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Greetings dear lenders, it's Khadi Diallo. Please accept my apologies for taking so long to post a comment. I thank all my lenders, very much, from the bottom of my heart. I made an excellent profit on my loan, and was able to make a success of it. I have been wanting to send you a photo of myself working with my business. I made a profit of 575,600 FCFA (about 1,225 USD) after repaying my loan. I am planning to use the funds to increase my working capital. I am still engaged in selling seafood products from my homeland (a small island in the Casamance river, in the remote post-conflict south of Senegal). I am putting various other business plans on hold while I strengthen my financial base. I will continue to post updates in the coming months. Thank you, and I wish all Zidisha lenders and friends a happy and prosperous year 2012.

Hello, my name is Khady Diallo and I am from the island of the Carabane but I live in the capital Dakar. I am a merchant and I sell sea food. The products I sell depend on the season and the location where I can sell them. For example, I go to Carabane to buy fresh shrimp and dried oysters. Sometimes I go to Guinea Bissau to buy different products, it's a little far and expensive and crossing the Guinean border can be a hassle. It's also not easy for someone who desn't speak portugese or creole. Sometimes I order dried fish from Cap Skirine and the product is brought up by truck to Dakar. If it's from Carabane or Ziguinchor, it's shipped up by boat.
