About Me

I am Madame Bonzi. My given name is Hadamou Thianhoun. I married Mr. Bonzi in 1997 and we have four children, three girls and one boy, whom we love very much. All of our children go to school. My husband loves and respects me. My husband has professional training in building construction, but currently works for a charitable organization which helps people in difficulty. We are all from the Dedougou region, but live now in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, because that is where our work is. We have a small house which we own ourselves. My studies were limited to the first "diplôme" of our educational system. I was the only lady of the household, and our family is large. This is why my husband and I decided that I would start up a small business selling cold water and juice. I also had the opportunity to sell clothing and soap, but that did not develop into a permanent business. I would like to open a restaurant once I am able to gather the necessary resources.

My Business

Right now I sell only cold water and juice. A water bottling company provides the water. As for the juice, I make it myself using local products which are cultivated in the various regions of Burkina. These are well known and popular products. They include "bissap" [a type of hibiscus flower which is dried and made into a sweet, bright red drink] and ginger. I work with two young adults who are responsible for sales in public and commercial areas of the city. The products are all natural and well known. Other women also sell them, but I stand out because I prioritize quality without reducing quantity given. The profit margin is not large during the rainy season, but strong customer loyalty allows me to attain rapid turnover. My husband and I pooled our savings to purchase a second refrigerator in order to sell more during the hot season, and this will serve as an asset for our future restaurant, which should be a good business, because my husband has invested in professional food preparation training. Due to Burkina's weak financial capacity, many people eat in restaurants during the day, and I thus think it is a good business.
My monthly expenses amount to about CFA 140,000 [$270] and my average monthly sales revenues are about CFA 150,000 [$290] during the rainy season.
With this loan I hope to hire an additional young person to work with the two who currently sell my drinks, which will allow me to make more profitable use of my second refrigerator.

Loan Proposal

This loan will allow me to acquire a trolley which I will use to transport coolers containing water and juice. With this new trolley, I will be able to employ a third young adult in addition to the two who currently work with me. The hot season is approaching now, and this additional salesperson will allow me to increase my sales revenue.

About Me

Mon mari m'aime et me respecte.

My Business

    Dear all,

My name is Mien and I have arrived in Burkina Faso last weekend as the first Client Relationship Intern for Zidisha in this country. I am looking forward to enlarge the community of Zidisha members in Burkina Faso.
Currently I am meeting the existing clients and yesterday afternoon I had the chance to meet Mrs. Bonzi and her husband at their home in Kossodo, a neighbourhood on the outskirts of the capital Ouagadougou. They welcomed me with a glass of fresh bissap and we had a long and interesting conversation.
As you could read from her previous comments, Mrs Bonzi encountered some serious problems while trying to expand her business. Originally she planned to use the loan to buy another cart and so she did but shortly after one of her refrigerators broke down and she paid even more than the loan she was granted for the reparations. To make matters worse an accident happened with the new cart while the youngsters walking around with it where taking shelter for the heavy rain. A truck drove over the cart while trying to avoid the deep holes in the muddy road and destroyed most of it. Because of the broken cart and refrigerator Mrs. Bonzi could no longer employ the young men and they left.
Nevertheless she did not give up and she is continuing her business of selling ginger juice and delicious bissap with the help of another young man. He picks up the drinks in the morning and walks around with them all day trying to sell as much as he can. Just to give you an idea: one small bag (because a lot of drinks are sold in plastic bags in Africa) of juice costs 50 CFA or about 0,09 USD/0,07 euro. For each 500 CFA the young man sells he receives 100 CFA. The remaining income goes to Mrs. Bonzi. On good days they sell for as much as 4000 CFA, but during the rainy season (which is cooler), most of the days yield around 1500 CFA which is just enough to cover expenses.
The fact that she decided to keep up her business unlike all the misfortune, guaranteed that Mrs. Bonzi is able to follow up very well on her monthly instalments. I was quite impressed by her force and uprightness.

She told me about her dream to start a small restaurant and her hope that lenders will still be ready to help her realizing this dream when she is ready for it. She plans to look for a good spot to start this small restaurant, while still continuing to sell the juices in order to ensure her revenue, and she’ll prepare a business plan during the following months. I am looking forward to hear more about it. I hope you too!

    Good evening,

With the money that I have received I was able to buy a 3rd cart and I was looking forward to expand my business. Unfortunately shortly after the payment of my loan one of my refrigerators broke down and the costs of repair were up to 60000 CFA (117 USD).
To make matters worse the repair hasn’t been done very well and the two young men workingwith me have left.
I am still convinced that ZIDISHA offers a real good opportunity toimprove businesses and I will do everything I can to meet my liabilities.

Thank you so much for your encouragements and trust, in spite of the difficulties that came up.

    Mrs. BONZI
