About Me

My name is Charles Oduory Odundo and I am 48 yes old married with two children namely Daisy and Gideon aged 9 and 7 respectively.I am an orphan since age 12.I was born in a family of four which included me my younger brother and my two sisters..My parents both died when I was very young.I was educated by wellwishers and the local church and I reached form four.I could not proceed with my education because I had to be a bread winner for my younger siblings. We survived by doing manual and odd jobs in the neighborhood to be able to feed. My two sisters got married and my younger brother moved to town.Having inherited my father's two acre piece of land,I decided to work in my farm and feed myself and my family. It has not been easy because seedlings are costly and not easy to come by.But I made up my mind to work hard on my farm instead of working for others. The journey so far has been rewarding even though due to limited resources and high prices of seeds and implements, I have been able to farm only a fraction of land.I am hoping that by joining zidisha I will get help to enable me to farm the entire acreage for food security and to sell extra farm produce.

My Business

My business is basically farming whereby I purchase the farm implements to be used in ploughing my land and the seeds to be used and the requisite fertilizers.I grow maize which is a staple food here and use a part of the harvest for family consumption and sell the balance to my neighbors and some I take to our local market.I chose this kind of business because there was land available and there was demand for maize. My typical costs are fertilizer, seedlings, labour costs and cost of post harvest.I use my profits to educate my two children and to expand my planting area and also to construct a house for my family..

Loan Proposal

I will buy six bags of cement to cement the floor of my store for groundnuts and to cement the walls. The cost of each bag of cement is $8 and six of them will cost a total of $48.Cementing the floor and walls of the store will reduce the dumpness in the store hence reducing the chances of aflatoxin in the groundnuts stored there. It will ensukre safety of the stored groundnuts and enhance the storage time. This will help me to sell the groundnuts when the prices are stable. My profits will improve by 10%.
