About Me

My Name is veronica Wangari Muthoni, I am a Kenyan citizen born in Kajiado. I am the sixth born in our family. I am married and live with my family in Molo at a village called Kapsita. My husband is a taxi driver. We are blessed with two children. They are both boys. Our first born is 10 years, he is in class four and our second born son is seven years in class one. We are a Christian family. I am a form four leaver. I finished my secondary school but never went to college because my parents could not afford to pay for my college fee . One year ago, I decided to start my own business in order to support my family financially. After a long research, I decided on the business of keeping rabbits. The business appealed to me because of the high demand for rabbit meat which has been growing in Molo. I started this business with the help of my husband. He gave me money that enabled me to buy my two rabbits. A doe and a buck. The doe gave birth to 10 kits which has today multiply to many rabbits that I do sell. The money that I get from selling rabbits help me buy food for my family.

My Business

I raise rabbits with the aim of selling them. I started this business after realizing that there was high demand for rabbit meat in Molo region. Many people have now become accustomed to eating rabbit meat because of the numerous nutritional benefits that come with rabbit meat. The rabbits sells much faster because their meat is much cheaper as compared to other sources of meat. I sell rabbits within and outside Molo town to butcheries, people who keep rabbits as pets and schools which buy rabbits for student activities. A mature rabbit sells between $20 - $25. I also sell rabbit manure to organic farmers and gardeners who pay me depending on the amount supplied. I am able to make good money from this business because rabbits reproduce at a faster rate as their gestation period is just 30days. They also feed on cheap locally available vegetables such as cabbages, thing like maize, banana and cassava peels. The risk that I have faced is diseases which sometimes attack the rabbits. But My greatest challenge right now is luck of enough house for the rabbits. I am in need of a bigger house with several cages so as to avoid inbreeding of the rabbits. Inbreeding causes production to go down. Each rabbit that gives birth should be kept in a cage with its children and once the children are of age, they should be separated to their own cages so that they can start their own family. For this reason, I request Zidisha organization to loan me $50 dollars to help me buy materials for constructing a bigger house for the rabbits.
