About Me

Hello, my name is Soukeynatou Ndao. I am married and the mother of five children. I am Senegalese. At the moment, I work for the women's collective "PENC" that stores and cooks local cereals, and this allows me to make a living and pay for my children's schooling. My husband is retired, it is my duty to help him take care of my family's needs.

My Business

The Collective "PENC" where I work is based in Djedah Thiaroy Kao in a suburb of Dakar that is struck by poverty and especially flooding these recent years. My collective works to create jobs and revenue by selling and cooking local cereals. Our group's objectives are to fight against poverty, illiteracy and to promote the social and economic development of women and their daughters.
Our collective profits by selling local cereals and by offering literacy, management and saving seminars. With regards to our business activities, we need better packaging to store and sell our products. We are asking for a loan to invest in packaging to help boost our production. This loan will improve our ability to store our products and protect them from long term damage.
In the past, we worked with local banks. On June 24th 2008 we borrowed 100 000 CFA, which we repaid on the 5th of December 2008. On November 17th 2009 we borrowed 150 000, that we repaid the 19th of July 2010. These loans were offered by the bank of CADDTK.

Loan Proposal

With regards to our business activities, we need better packaging to store and sell our products. We are asking for a loan to invest in packaging to help boost our production. This loan will improve our ability to store our products and protect them from long term damage. We will use this packaging to create a logo, like that our customers can identify us in the market.

Mme Soukey has asked me to type the following comment for her lenders:

Mme Soukey vous remercie. Le premier pret on a danse. Toutes les femmes ont danse, ca a ete une joie. Mais avec le deuxieme pret j'ai prie, pour que l'entreprise de Zidisha aille de l'avant. Nous savons que Zidisha travaille pour nous, on ne les remerciera jamais assez. Merci et bonne continuation.

    Best,

    Dear Lenders,
Mme Soukey's original repayment schedule requied her to make the installments on the 19th of each month. Due to a technical error, installments appear to be due on the 3rd of each month. We are therefore instituting a 1-month grace period so that Mme Soukey can make her payments on the 19th of each month without being late.

This comment is long over due but I have not forgotten my first meeting with Madame Soukey. She is a hard-working, benevolent soul who is a delight to be around. She and the women she works with come together every day to tend to the mill: processing, drying, and mixing grains. Upon discussing long term goals with Mme Soukey, she expressed hopes to one day purchase a vehicle in order to expand her business outside of Pekine. She has recently used her loan to buy in bulk, both grains and packaging materials, in order to be more efficient with time and money.

Attached are some photos of Mme Soukey's business.

I would like to thank the lenders who put their trust in me. Thank you to Zidisha as well. With the funding, I am able to buy millet and corn to prepare traditional dishes of couscous, tiagry and arraw. I am very happy because the products are less expensive.
    Thank you
    Soukey

    Dear Mme Soukey,

It's truly great to see you with the money you all need to continue in your work, enough at least to begin again your production. This is still a good outcome despite the shortfall. My apologies for not meeting the required sum. The full amount would have been even better for you and the wonderful women of PENC. No matter. Next time, we'll do better.

Yours is an amazing story. It's a great privilege to be a part of this enterprise. Thank you, if I may be so bold, on behalf of everyone who has benefited from your largesse and your great will. Your efforts are not going unnoticed.

Thanks go to Sam too for his exceptional effort helping to make all this possible. Bravo!

    Dear Lenders,

My name is Sam Gant and I'm currently one of the Client Relationship Managers active here in Senegal. I met with Mme Soukey today to help her finalize the acceptance of her loan--although she did not attain the amount she originally requested, she decided to accept the current offer before it expires because it will still be very valuable to her in making bulk purchases. She explained that with the money she has received she will be able to purchase around 2 tons of millet, maize, or couscous to be processed, packaged, and resold on behalf of her cooperative. She was very grateful to Zidisha lenders for allowing her to expand her business, and expresses gratitude on behalf of the 300 women who will benefit from the expansion of the cooperative.

On Friday, myself and another intern checked in on Madame Soukey's collective in Pikine. We sorted out all of the issues in conjunction with her profile, and she has renewed her loan application to buy more raw materials. She is confident and excited to buy more primary materials and keep up PENC's frenetic output. As of now, the business is bustling and the machines are humming. In fact, PENC recently received a generous gift from a local politician of a second miling machine to maximize their output. However to maintain PENC's pace, the capital to buy more grain is essential, and she is touched that lenders in the global Zidisha community have had so much faith in her in the past, and hopes that they will continue to do so.

    Hello,
Myself, along with two other Zidisha interns, Basma and Cameron, visited PENC two weeks ago, and since then we have been away on mandated visits to rural villages with our study abroad program. We apologize for the delay in rectifying inconsistencies in Madame Soukey's account, and we hope that her lack in communication (really our lack) has not deterred prospective lenders from considering her as a viable business option. Madame Soukey is an extremely driven and keen businesswoman. She is determined to fulfill her loan, and any mismatch in her profile was our fault.

    Update- Business

While assisting Madame Soukey last week with a problem with her account, she gave us another quick update on her business. Madame Soukey who runs the transformation of local cereals of Pikine revealed to us that for the past three months she has not been making enough to earn a profit so all of the women have been working voluntarily. They currently earn 40,000 cfas per month.Their expenses include 50,000 cfas for fixed utilities, and for transport 1000 to 2000 cfas. Bills are split with another renter. Soukey will be paying off her loan within the next week and will be seeking another one soon.

    Future Plans

She hopes to expand her business by either buying a car so she can have access to the larger markets of Dakar or exporting overseas. They are currently partnered with the Dakar Women’s Groupe, Terre Nouvelle, and CADTTK.

Hi everyone, it is with pleasure that I return to you to give you news. The last Zidisha loan I received really helped with the development of my business and has brought happiness to my entire family and the members of our organization. It was a great joy to receive this loan and no one could believe it. Thanks to this loan, I could increase my earnings and regularly pay my annual installments. I intend to make my last payment this week. Thank you for the joy that you all have given to me and my entire family.

    Dear lenders,

The disbursement of this loan has been delayed, because Ms. Ndaw seems to have provided us with an incorrect telephone number, and we have not been able to contact her to advise her that the loan is fully funded. We have requested another Zidisha borrower who knows Ms. Ndaw to put her in touch with us. We will continue to try to contact Ms. Ndaw for one more week, and if we are not successful by then, we will cancel this loan and credit the funds back to the lenders who financed it.

Please accept our apologies for this unusual delay in disbursing a loan that you have funded. As always, don't hesitate to contact me at [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

    Best regards,

    Julia Kurnia

    Director, Zidisha Inc.
