Dear lenders, I spoke to Mr Aggrey yesterday and he told me he had a court case due to a traffic offense and this slowed his business a bit. He is now back to his business full time and he will clear his arrears in a week's time.

I was at the Adams Arcade markets on Saturday and stopped by Aggrey's stall to say hi to him. We didn't get to talk for long but things are still going well for him, his family and his business. He'd had a quiet few days in terms of sales but earlier last week things were very busy.

Aggrey Kadima has lots of plans and he’s working hard to achieve them. His day usually starts around 5am when he gets up, ready and going to the central Nairobi Gikomba Markets to buy stock for his clothing stall. He then heads to the Adams Arcade market area where his women’s clothing stall is up and running by mid morning. He and his two employees work there all day before packing up around 7pm and Aggrey gets home any time between 8 and 10pm depending on the notoriously bad Nairobi traffic. This is his usual routine six days a week, with Sunday being church and family time as Aggrey enjoys watching cartoons with his eleven month old son, Levin Baraka, and the occasional Arsenal football match.
Such a long working week would exhaust most people but Aggrey’s a really energetic, happy and positive guy. And he’s very switched on as he talked me through the income, expenses and challenges for his clothing stall as well as his other businesses. With his latest Zidisha loan and some of the profits from the clothes stall he purchased two motorbikes which he rents to boda boda (motorcycle taxi) drivers and he has also bought two small plots of land which he intends to crop for a few years before hopefully saving enough money to build a small house for his family so they don’t have to continue renting.
Aggrey, who’s originally from Busia County in the very west of Kenya, completed his KCSE (Kenyan Certificate of Secondary Education) but wasn’t able to attend college or university due to a lack of family finances, especially after his father died and his mother struggled to support eight children. So he would like to be able to give his children the educational and life opportunities that he didn’t have with he and his wife, Fith, hoping to have two more children and be able to afford for them all to complete primary, secondary and university education. Aggrey also uses his income to help support some of his siblings as well as Fith’s family.
Other future plans include possibly applying for another Zidisha loan to purchase a kerosene pump thus expanding his business interests and further diversifying his risk.
Back at the market stall, Aggrey and his employees are hard at work assisting customers with different style, colour and sized trousers (pants). They make some sales and the small profits will go towards Aggrey achieving his goals for his family.

Thanks Aggrey for clearing the overdue amount. Work very hard to restore your record to above 95% by making your payment on or before the due date.

Greetings lenders! My name is Neil DiMuccio, and I am a Client Relationship Manager with Zidisha in Kenya. I am currently visiting borrowers to learn more about them and support them with their Zidisha loans. It is my hope that this work will build bridges to better connection and understanding, and that Zidisha and its borrowers will increasingly grow, communicate, and support each other.

I was recently very fortunate to meet with Aggrey and his friend Jackline, both of whom are new borrowers, in their early 20s, working in the Adam’s Arcade / Toi Market area of Nairobi. The young and energetic duo were exceptionally polite, friendly, and patient with me. All told, we met, saw their shops, took pictures, went to a cyber café and did a New Borrower Orientation, waited out torrential downpour, and spent more time in their shops. This was topped off with a visit to the local lunch hall, where a traditional lunch of ugali and tasty nyama choma were served (if interested, please google these foods!).

Aggrey and Jackline work together in neighboring stalls of the market, selling women’s clothing. Jackline sells undergarments, while Aggrey sells tops, jumpsuits, and business wear. Asked whether women were reluctant to buy clothing from a man, Aggrey said that quite the contrary – they prefer it!

Jackline and Aggrey have both been in Nairobi for about 4 years, and have worked their way up from more informal work to be in the market. They each purchase used clothing and attempt to mark it up 100% to resell it in their shops. Asked what their future business plans were, they mentioned selling new clothing, which can fetch a higher price, as well as upgrading their location their selling location to a place where profits could be significantly higher. Even though they are both only in their early 20s, they each provide significant financial assistance to their families, and this responsibility could be noted in their keen business approach. They would each love to begin saving and investing more of their income, but high costs of living and their familial responsibilities make this goal very difficult.

I have high hopes for Aggrey and Jackline, and am extremely pleased to see how much they support each other. Thanks again for taking so much time to meet with me, and best wish in your future endeavors!
