Hello! As a lender, I'm a bit curious to how the business/school is going. Especially since you're over 1 month late with the first repayment. It would be nice with a status update, and some information regarding when you plan on start repaying the loan.

    Hello Traci!
Thank you for the report I really enjoyed reading it. I have also looked at your photographs of people from Kenya. They are great! I had to zoom all of them.

    Dear Hilda!
I admire your activity. Iused to be a teacher for 6 years and I know that running the school and teaching itself is not an easy job. But on the other hand you can see the progress of your pupils which is fantastic reward. It was for me. And you know you have been doing the right thing.
I also like the classrooms of your Academy, especially those teaching posters hanging on the walls. Have you painted them yourself? They are nice and well done.
I would like to participate in your next loan to help you to build more classrooms.
    All the best!
    Pavel (Eliduc)

Hello, my name is Traci Yoshiyama, Zidisha’s Kenya Client Relationship Manager. I am currently visiting Zidisha borrowers in and around Nairobi.

It is a proud moment for any parent in Kenya to be able to send their child to school, probably the proudest. Feelings mutual, children understand the possibilities education can bring and will go to great lengths to receive it. With enrollment high, the number of primary schools in Kenya quantifies in the tens of thousands. But despite the overwhelming amount of educational opportunities, many families struggle to pay for school fees, uniforms, or basic supplies. Wanting to counteract this widespread problem, Hilda Asaka began White Dove Academy. Businesses funded through Zidisha come in many forms and the results of such assistance is abounding. But maybe it is the teacher in me, for nothing is more satisfying than seeing a loan being used for something that benefits so many others.

Through the encouragement of a friend and an intrinsic desire to give back to her community, Hilda opened her school four years ago. Throughout the years, she has worked tirelessly to expand her school of humble beginnings to what it is today. What started with a student body of three (one being Hilda’s son) quickly grew to sixty, one classroom multiplied to four, and makeshift latrines are now a thing of the past. Although there is competition of neighboring schools, White Dove has staked its claim to being, “The place where students speak English.” Hilda takes obvious pride in this reputation and confirms that all teachers must speak English while teaching classes. Wanting to provide quality education, she further explains how all her teachers are formally trained. Not only does she value excellence, Hilda believes in education for all. Several families are unable to pay for school fees, but seeing the potential in each student, Hilda waived their fees. Not wanting anyone to feel like an outsider, she even gave one student her daughter’s old uniform.

While reminiscing about the years past, Hilda also speaks about the way forward. Currently only having enough classrooms for grades 1 and 2, constructing an additional room is her top priority. As a new school year approaches and the 2nd graders graduate onto third, they will need a classroom of their own. With formidable determination, Hilda is confident she will accomplish this goal. In the meantime, she was able to use her Zidisha loan to improve the infrastructure of the existing classrooms. Two walls were plastered and painted black, which are now being used as chalkboards. In addition to the enhancement of classrooms, a fence was put up around the school grounds, allowing for a secure playground for the children. Once paid back, Hilda hopes to take out a second loan, which will assist her in construction costs. Looking into the future, she hopes to have enough classrooms for all grade levels, including a permanent structure for her nursery school.

During my visit, Hilda remembers a discarded signpost, recently replaced with a metal version on the main road. Although the paint is chipping away and the words are slowly fading, the white dove is full of vibrancy. I suggest to Hilda that she post the sign on campus as a reminder and symbol of the beginning of this true success. It was an honor meeting you Hilda, and I hope to visit again. You are doing marvelous work and you are a true inspiration.

*The two children in the picture are Hilda’s son and daughter
