About Me

I am of Senegalese nationality and am 27 years old. I live in Dakar. My name is Cherif Dahirou Kane, a manager at SODEMED in the Point E neighborhood. I live in a place called Petit Mbao, a little fishing village. I also have my own business: I sell chickens and sheep for meat. Our climate is well suited to raising these animals. In order to help support my family, I am doing my best to grow my business, which has a lot of potential to earn good profits.

My Business

My business, raising chickens and sheep and selling them for meat, is very profitable in Senegal. For the chickens, I raise 300 chicks for 45 days, having purchased each one at 450 CFA (USD 1), and then when they are grown I sell them for 3000 - 3500 CFA (USD 7 - 8) each. I raise chickens continuously, replacing them almost every couple of months, so there is never any rupture in my stock. For the sheep, I purchase three to five young ones at a time and resell them after raising. Often they are sold to me for 50,000 CFA (USD 111) each and I sell them for 75,000 CFA (USD 167) or more. But since my working capital is limited, [I've not been able to raise very many at a time]. I previously received a loan of CFA 650,000 (USD 1,444) from SODEMED which I fully repaid in 16 months. I will be able to show documentation of this when we meet.

    Dear Lenders,

My name is Sam Gant and I'm currently the Zidisha Client Relationship Manager active here in Dakar Senegal. Yesterday I met with Cherif Kane, a very busy and hardworking young man who I managed to intercept as he zig-zagged between a constellation of medical centers n Dakar that he keeps stocked with medical supplies. Monday through Saturday M Kane works from 8AM to 8PM delivering medical supplies on an old Majesty 150 scooter-- he has 20 regular clients in Dakar and acts as a liaison between medical wholesalers and medical offices. He realizes a decent markup for products he delivers: a packet of 10 latex glove boxes purchased at $44 can be resold for $60-70, and a package of 150 catheters bought for $30 will be resold for $50. His clients often take goods on credit to repay him later.

M Kane offers his apologies for the delay in repayment. His businesses are necessarily dependent on each other: his capital to buy medical supplies is partly drawn from the money he makes selling chickens, and whenever he receives payment for deliveries his first priority is buying food and medicine for his livestock before reimbursing his obligations to Zidisha lenders. He anticipates making a payment soon and is eager to continue to expand his business with another loan.

Hello! Here in Dakar with Zidisha I am meeting beneficiaries at the businesses and connecting them to you.
Here are several photos of Cherif Kane's sheep (South of the Sahara sheep start to resemble goats)and chickens. On the roof of his home on the outskirts of Dakar Cherif has set up a small farm. The chickens are raised in this coop and he rotates every month, stocking the coop with chicks. Here in Dakar the is no problem selling chickens, they sell like "petits pains" (pancakes).
Cherif came in yesterday (May 7) to pick up his loan check, and wanted you all to know he is grateful for your help.
He hopes to continue growing his stock of animals since he is responsible for his family.
