I was raised by a single mother who educated me through some hardship. I eventually completed my high school education and enrolled for a diploma in Information Technology at JKUAT.
After my education and with long months of searching for employment, I decided to start rearing rabbits and local Kienyeji chicken. I started rearing 2 agricultural rabbits and five Kienyeji chicken after undergoing a training seminar at the Ministry of Livestock. After a few months, my stock began increasing and in two years, I was farming a stock of 150 rabbits and 100 local Kienyeji chicken.
I come from the western part of my country where people only believe in getting employment and discourage self-employment. With my current livestock, I am able to sustain my family's needs and show how life can also be built from livestock keeping.
Currently I am married and I am blessed with a son. My hobby is watching documentaries, especially on farming techniques, and that is where I also get motivated. I also enjoy sports.
In my farming project, I produce and sell mature rabbits at a cost of 2,000 Ksh. and above, rabbit weaners at a cost of 800 Ksh., and rabbit manure at a cost of 50 Ksh. to local farmers. Chicken market goes at 1,500 Ksh. for cocks and 800 to 1,000 Ksh. for hens. A tray of eggs costs between 300 to 350 Ksh., whereas a one-month chick generates 200 Ksh. So now there if the production of food in many peoples homes.
Generally I keep rabbits and local chicken together with the ken-bro breed. My intention is to add to my stock of the layer chickens so as to increase the production of eggs. Out of the research that I have been able to carry out, there is a real need for chicken eggs within my own locality, and I want to sustain the market by at least rearing 600 layer chickens within the next six months.
I intend to buy 15 bags of layers feeds at a cost of USD 375.
Ten drinkers at USD 43
Ten feeders at USD 50
Three 50 kg bags of chick mash at USD 73.5
Vaccines include the following:
Newcastle vaccine at USD 3.5
Gumboro vaccine at USD 3.5
Fowl pox vaccine at USD 4
Pneumonia caccine at USD 5
Transport cost at USD 1
Total cost = USD 558.5
In this project, I will be able to cater for my child's education and also provide for the needs of my family.
I expect to make a profit of USD 480 per month if all goes well.
