About Me

I am 27 yrs old married with three children of school going age. all in school.I have a form four level of education and i live and stay in ongata rongai an outskirt town of Nairobi. i started my business Five years ago to make a living after being in informal employment for some years where i was not able to support my family. with my monthly income of about 37000 i am able to educate and feed my family and support my parents. I have a dream to improve myself financially as i know i have not fully attained my financial capabilities.

My Business

I am a motorbike taxi rider where i ferry people from Kware bus stage in ongata rongai to and from their homes. there is high demand for such services as the homes are very far from the main road and bus stage and some interior roads are not accessed by cars. i have many customers due to my experience maturity and characters people trust me unlike my competitors who are younger than me. The business is profitable as the cost of running a motorbike are very low and easy to manage as it deals with direct contact with the customers who are your employers.

Loan Proposal

Thanks to all Zidisha staff and all Zidisha Lenders for all the loans that you have been kindly advancing to me. They have real helped and changed my family's financial status for the better.
The loan i am now applying will be used to further advance the milk project that i had earlier started. Considering that we are heading to a festive season, milk demand has real increased.
I will use the loan to tap the high demand. I will add stock of Ksh. 20,000 and the remaining Ksh. 5,000 will be used to monitor shortages.

I once again thank you for your continued support.

Due to the elapse of the festive season, Milk customers have drastically reduced and the motorcycle business is also not doing well for now. My wife also gave birth and he is not fully strong leaving me a large number of tasks to perform each day.

    Am sorry for any inconvenience.
Wishing the Zidisha family a Happy new year.

    Hey Lenders,
Thanks a lot for the loans you have been giving me. They have really become a blessing to my family. The loans have helped me open a milk selling business which is really doing well. It has subsidized the revenues i collect from my motorcycle business. i can now save all the income from the motorcycle as my daily family expenses are catered by the milk business.
They have also employed my wife who now does in the milk shop who was initially jobless.

Thanks once again. Greetings from my family.
    Nerbat Karani.

    Dear all,

Today I met Nerbat Karani in Orangata Rongai, a small place on the very outskirts of Nairobi. I am currently also staying in Rongai, and thus took my way to the meeting place by foot. After a short walk I came to a large market place, with people selling everything from underwear to chicken. It was noisy, and bussing, but Nerbat found me quickly and we went to the side of the market place where his motorbike stood. When we came there, three other motorbike drivers immediately approached us, thinking I wanted to get a ride somewhere. Nerbat explained that I simply wanted to talk to him, something they were quite confused about. A mzungo (the Swahili word for white person), having a conversation with one of them?? They soon realized that we were serious and left us alone, though looking back at us from time to time.

Nerbats story is full of twists and turns, and it has taken him a while to get to the positions he is in now. Nerbat comes from a city on the road between Kisumu and Nairobi. After dropping out of school at the age of 16 his brother told him to go to Nairobi to find a job. When he came he started taking some computer classes, in order to be applicable for management positions, but the fees got too expensive and he had to quit. He then joined a distribution company. Through working for them he got in contact with a bread-maker who asked him whether he wanted to advertise his bread. Nerbat said “sure!” and thus took on the role as an advertiser. However, the earnings were not high enough for Nerbat and he soon realized that being a motorbike driver would be more profitable.

Nerbat purchased his first motorbike by taking up a loan with a bank. This enabled him to buy a small motorbike, which gave him a daily income of 7 dollars. Nerbat, however, was not satisfied and wanted to make his business more profitable. After having paid back his loan to the bank he therefore turned to Zidisha for a new loan, which enabled him to buy a bigger and better bike. The new bike both uses less fuel and is able to transport more. This took him, as he said himself, “to a whole new level!”, he was now earning at least 14 dollars every day. He has 8 steady clients who call him every day and thus his minimum wages is 14 dollars. One of the greatest difficulties Nerbat faces is the rain. It makes the streets get muddy and slippery and riding on a motorbike gives you no shelter what so ever. His second loan was mainly used for reparations and maintenance of the bike.

Nerbat has a wife and three healthy children, all girls. They go to school, the oldest one being 10 years old. Nerbat expressed great gratitude towards Zidisha, which really enabled him to create a better life for him and his family.

However, this is not the end of the story. Nerbat has bigger plans for his business. He wants to apply for a new loan, which would enable him to buy another bike that he could rent out. This would further increase his earnings. The increased revenue he would use to firstly pay back his loan and then save to acquire a car. Nerbats dream is to open up a car-rental in Ongata Rongai. “How do you know it will be profitable?” I asked him. “Well, there are a lot of apartments around here and the numbers of people living here are increasing from year to year. So, there are a lot of people who will have to get from one place to the other, a great market for a car-rental. And until now, no-one has opened one!”

      Nerbat
