My life growing up was not well off at all; orphaned at a tender age of eleven, I did not have any other option left other than working to support myself and my two younger siblings. I was a simple laborer - doing a bit of everything which did not earn much. I can recall there were times I did not even make enough for food.
Little did I know that life was about to change. In the month of June, 2015, I attended a business start up course where I was trained on ways to start a business with ease using the available resources. This training course was organized by the area local government whereby I, and the fellow graduands were given a sum of one thousand shillings to help start our respective choices of business. As for me, the only resource I had was a small piece of land which my dear parents had left behind. I decided to get in to tree and flower planting as my business venture and this is my income earner to date.
My venture into tree and flower selling was just a mere trial. I didn't have the slightest idea it could become my source of income. With the gift of one thousand shillings, I bought tree and flower seeds and went back home where I made my first seedbeds, one for flowers and another for trees. I didn't have any money to buy the required fertilizers so I borrowed manure from my neighbors who kept cows. In about three months time my seedlings were ready for the market. I was lucky to get a generous buyer who bought all my seedlings at a go. This gave me the encouragement to make more seedbeds and plant more. The routine has repeated several times every year since then, and I'm glad I could get customers and also being the only tree and flower grower in the area. Water for irrigation has been a big challenge, but I try my level best to cope with it, using water harvesting from the rains and storing the water as much as I can.
I will use the funding to purchase a water pump to ease the irrigation. I believe with this tool I will produce more and boost my earning.
