Loan Proposal

The project is about keeping layers that will lay eggs for sale. The plan is to keep 250 layers as the starting point. I may add the number depending on the availability of funds and quality of the chicks. I will purchase chicks from a trusted dealer in Nairobi who imports them from Malawi at the age of three months old. Therefore, I will keep the chicks for another three months before they start laying eggs at the age of six months. I have decided to purchase chicks originating from Malawi because poultry farmers from Malawi are known to nurture the chicks well with vaccines and nutritious feeds while Kenyan farmers rarely sell three-month-old chicks.

One chick would cost USD 1.00 in line with the exchange rate with the Kenyan Shilling. The chicks will be kept indoors by the deep litter system. The number of chicks is assumed to decline at 0.02% after every four months due to death.
It is anticipated that in the first four months, egg production will be 70% of the total layers per day. The second quarter and the third quarter egg production will be 80% and 75% respectively. At the fourth and fifth quarters, egg production will be 70% and 60% respectively per day. In total 3,073 eggs are expected to be produced. The percentages vary according to age of chickens. When they start laying normally, their laying performance is usually low and picks up when they mature. However, the laying performance slows down when the chickens are old.

The main aim of the project is to enable members of my community eradicate poverty by raising their own income from the sale of eggs from my poultry farm. The members of the community, who have the passion to sell eggs to different markets, can raise income in order to rise their living standards with well-furnished houses, have money for medical fees, school fees an d clothes for their children. Furthermore, rearing the chickens will improve my gardens by using poultry manure and hence increasing productivity per unit of land.

With such a project, the profit margin is about 200%. An annual increase sales volume 10-15% will be expected in the first five years whilst the three-month-old chicks purchasing program will be ongoing to enable the farm to maintain and increase its production of the chicks into both broilers and layers.
