About Me

My name is Joseph Kiragu, am 32 years old, married and a dad to 3 children; Marsha, Adan and Venus. I was born in a small town in Kenya called Nanyuki and attended local public schools through my education up to university where I got a government scholarship to study Mechanical Engineering.

My late father was a farmer while my mother was a housewife. We didn't have much but through the meager earnings from our farm, we made it through each day. My wife and I met at the university and got married shortly after our graduation.

Unemployment in our country has been a big problem for many years and with a strong determination to grow ourselves, we started a small school transport business. We chose this type of business because I had inherited a van from my late father. We started with a few children from neighboring estates taking them to local private schools. The business has grew amidst challenges but we have managed to stay afloat, break even and have a bit of reserve.

The transport business served us well for a couple of years and my wife and I are very grateful to the Zidisha community for the support particularly through the two loans that we got to finance operations of our business. I regret not being able to pay the loans within the set time but we are happy we finally managed to pay off the entire loans.

We sold the van along with the transport business and invested in a 7.5 acre farm in Nyeri County, about 150km north of Nairobi (Kenya's capital). We grow a wide range of vegetables that we sell in the capital. The business had a few challenges at the start but with time it has grown from just my wife and myself to three additional employees. We have also started a poultry business unit so that we include eggs in our products. The climate sometimes gets very dry so we have invested in dripline irrigation and two water reservoirs with a total water storage capacity of 1.2 million liters.
We also have one small seedling propagation green house from which we propagate seedlings for our farm.

My Business

My income comes from the farming business. It's called Lusoi Hill Farm named after Lusoi Hill on whose slope the farm is located. We have a farm house, and two extra houses in which our three employees Bob, Aron and Brian leave.

I am also employed as a salesman and this really helps as it helps capitalize the business and support the family as well in addition to the revenue we get from our farming business (Lusoi Hill Farm - or LHF for short).

We grow Potatoes, Cabbages, Onions, Cucumbers, Capsicums and Beetroot. Nairobi has a population of 4.4 million people and a subsequent huge demand for fresh vegetables. Our farm is 150km or 3 hours away from Nairobi making it relatively close and in a good position to serve the vegetables demand.

Our revenue is earned weekly due to our planting program that enables us to have a steady harvest of vegetables. We sell directly to consumers in Nairobi through our home delivery service. We market our vegetables online through WhatsApp, our Facebook and Instagram pages. We have a small mini-van with a load capacity of 350kg that we use to do the home deliveries. Our revenue ranges from $130 ( Kes. 20,000) to $150 (Kes.30,000) a week. We have plans to grow this revenue by scaling our production and marketing our home delivery services to more customers.

We have production costs which are both fixed costs, largely Bob, Aron and Brian's salaries along with a consultant agronomist who visits our farm every two weeks. The rest are variable costs which are costs of inputs like seeds, fertilizer, agro-chemicals, and irrigation fuel. Our overhead costs are logistical costs of delivering produce to our customers and bringing inputs to the farm.

Our business has helped us secure our children's school fees, pay rent and have a decent life. We have also reinvested a lot of the profits back into the business to help grow it.

We would really appreciate any help we can get from lenders to grow our business. Our key growth areas are;
1. Developing an e-commerce platform to help us reach more customers and improve their online shopping experience. We already have a website, (www.lusoihillfarm.com), but a mobile app would be better as it is more user friendly.

2. We would like to have a bigger van, that can carry up to 1500kg to help us make more deliveries in a single trip. This will save us fuel cost and improve our delivery time.

3. We would like to improve our produce store by adding a cold room. This will help us preserve the freshness of the vegetables and allow us to make home deliveries over several days.

4. We would like to lease a bigger farm to allow more room to scale our production.

We cant do all the above growth projects at at go but we are willing to take each step at a time.

Loan Proposal

I will invest the money received in enhancing the insurance cover for my vehicle and my business. This will enable it accommodate the tourism business i have in mind. I will also set up a website as an online marketing platform to enable me market my leisure travel to beyond local residents. I will also take a short certificate course on tourism to improve my business handling skills.

This expansion will improve my family's income. We will be able to increase our savings towards owning our own home and sending our children to good universities in future. We shall also provide employment to a few people for example a website designer and casual marketing assistant.

We hope to grow our revenue by at least 40% which will increase our profitability.

    Hello everyone.
My team and I are really grateful for the support we've received from all our backers from different parts of the world. Our farm is now profitable and we have made great impact on the lives of the team employed on the farm and the team that works very hard in the city markets selling our produce. We have also made great impact on our customers who love the quality of our produce and the fact that we deliver right to their doorsteps. We have removed the middle-men and by doing that we guarantee consistency in quality and better prices for our customer as well as good margins for us.

Last time we borrowed money to fund our seedling propagation nursery. We planted 10,000 cabbage seedlings. We have successfully transplanted these seedlings to the main farm as shown in the photos below.

We shall sell these cabbages after 3 months at a projected price of 20 shillings per cabbage (200,000 shillings in total for al the cabbages - $ 1,300).

    We have had very good and exciting progress in the last 3 months. Despite the heavy rains that have made working in the open fields more difficult we have achieved the following;
    1. We harvested 1.5 tones of onions that we sold out directly to retail customers over the months of September and October. We made close to 90 retail customers that loved our " farm to kitchen" model.

    2. We are expecting to harvest close to 6000 cabbages in the next 2 weeks and we are just as excited to sell them all out.

3.We still have onions in the farm that we shall be harvesting within the next two weeks and a ready retail market for them.

    4. We have a relatively good harvest of potatoes.

Thank you for financing my business progress. I will buy hybrid onion seedlings for planting in August. Onions mature in 5 months, so we shall harvest these on in February 2024. We expect to yield 2,500kg of onions and sell them in Kenya and Uganda.

My team and I are very grateful for your help.

From the money I received last time, I bought Peatmoss, a medium used to propagate seedlings. I propagated 10,000 cabbage seedlings that we shall be transplanting to the open farm very soon.
Without the medium, I would have not been able to propagate the seedlings and I would have had to buy the seedlings from other farmers. This would have cost me 50,000 shillings ($333). With the medium I propagated up to 50,000 seedlings. This saved me $1,600!

Am very excited to update the community that we are progressing very well. The seeds we planted with the media we borrowed money to buy have germinated well. We have nearly 10,000 seedlings that are a week old. We have about 3 weeks to transplanting these seedlings in the field and planting a second phase of 10000 more seedlings in the nursery.
The 50 kg media we bought will help us propagate over 30,000 seedlings in 3 phases each 4 weeks apart. This means that we shall have a consistent production from our farm.

    Please see photos below.

Today, 8th June 2023, we bought 50kg of Peatmoss (the medium that we use in our green house to propagate seedlings). We raised $58 from our most recent funding application and this helped us buy the medium. We shall propagate 34,000 cabbage seedlings in four monthly phases, all of which shall be transplanted in our farm.

In the first picture, we have the Peatmoss medium that we bought.

In the second picture below my team and I are setting up drip lines on one of the blocks in our farm.

We shall also post photos and videos of the propagation process here and o our website, Facebook and Instagram pages.

    Hello,
My name is Joseph and am a member of the Zidisha community. I've benefited a great deal from 3 past and these helped me expand my transport business. I had several challenges to get through but the funding from Zidisha helped me ensure my operations were not interrupted. Eventually I sold the business and invested in a farm. My team and I grow a wide range of vegetables which we sell through our online platform and make home deliveries to our customers. This innovative way if selling directly to our customers ensures our customers get the best value for their money in terms of quality of groceries and the price and time at which they get them. Please check out out website, www.lusoihillfarm.com or visit and follow our Facebook,Instagram and LinkedIn pages (lusoihillfarm) to see our great journey.

    Hello Zidisha Community,
Am sorry it has taken me this long to finish off paying my loan. I know it's a disappointment to the Zidisha community that believed in me and trusted that I would pay back the money they lent me and pay it back in the time that I promised I would. I have had to close the transport business and invest in an agribusiness (Lusoi Hill Farm). This has strained my cashflow because I have had to build the business from ground up. Am happy that we have some traction now and are focusing on strengthening our new structures and processes to enable us grow. . Once I pay off the loan I will share all about my agribusiness; in the meantime you can check it out at www.lusoihillfarm.com. For now though, I'd like to focus on repaying my existing loan and rebuilding the trust the Zidisha Community must have lost in me.

I earn 10,000 weekly from my business. 4500 of this goes towards overheads while 4000 goes towards supporting my family. I save 500 for contingency. This leaves me with 1000 which am able to consistently pay for my loan.

    Greetings,

My family has had some financial constrains that made us sell our transport van. I went into casual employment for a while to take care of my family and stabilize our financial situation especially because our children were in school.

Fortunately, I have been able to do that and with some savings, I started a business selling house hold items on hire purchase. The business is still small but has been consistent over the last 5 months and I now feel I can comfortably resume my repayments.

Yesterday, 23rd October I received part payment for the transport service job that I have been doing. My wife and I were able to service the vehicle, pay a few domestic obligations like electricity and gas and also make a payment towards settling our Zidisha Loan. I am optimistic that we shall get more transport jobs this holiday season. Thank you very much for your continued support and God bless you all!
