About Me

My name is James Karanja. I come from Kiti, Nakuru County. Kiti Mawanga Makao is approximately a 20 minutes drive from Nakuru town. At Nakuru stage board a vehicle going to makao and alight at makao. Ask for karanja’s home. I am a married man and a father of four children who are currently out of school and settled elsewhere completed my class eight examination after which I lived with my parents and helped them in their farming business and as a first born support my younger siblings for five years after which I got married. I began farming at my fathers’ home on a piece of land they had given me. I specialized in maize and horticulture. I was in the farming business for two years before I started selling newspapers for two years. The business was not so profitable so I opted for selling milk from the interior to the town. In 1997, after the post election violence, I was living in Njoro. I moved to Gilgil and left my family in Gashura. In Gilgil I ventured in farming. I specialized in onions; maize and onions. I moved back to Gashura after my first son went to high school and thereafter ventured into business of cooking mandazis at my home and supplied them to the neighbouring communities. The business had been going on well but I quit it and left my wife to continue with it as I ventured into cloth selling business. I sell second hand clothes in various markets within Nakuru County such as the Bahati market, Elburgon market and Njoro market. I had also tried working as a butcher but the prices of animals for sale went up prompting me to cease the business and invest in something different. I am a committed member of living water church and an assistant pastor in the church. All my children are already married and well settled

My Business

I am a trader in second hand clothes and obtain my clothes from the Nakuru market. In a month I purchase five bales of clothes at fifty thousand shillings. I sell a bale at approximately 13, 000, thus a profit of about 15,000 a month. I use at least 2240 shillings in transport in a month. My total profit is 12500 shillings in a month. The business has been going well as I use the money to cater for my family expenses and also the family food. I have been in the business for almost nine months and can asses it as a very efficient business apart from the time a hike in the price is considered. I take days off on Thursdays and Sundays. We sell on open air markets and sell both children’s’ and adults clothes.
The work though profitable, is very tiring and my age does not allow me to proceed with the business. I would love to change from the travelling business to something that will keep me more at home like dairy farming. I would love to purchase two cows; a gardener, a cow shed and other requirements to enable me still get the money without necessarily tiring me so much. This idea resulted from my neighbours who are doing so well with the business and the inadequate supply of milk in our area. I would like to purchase the cow either from ADC or Technology farm due to their good breeds.i will also purchase timber for building and other requirements.
