About Me

My name is James Wainaina, ID № 10744177, a Kenyan citizen. I live and work in Rongai District, Visoi sub-location, Rongai Division of Nakuru County. My home is near Kandutura police post and Kandutura Dispensary. Born in 1968, I am the fourth born in a family of nine; three boys and six girls. I went to Mogotio primary school for my primary education. Later on I joined Sacho high school for my Ordinary (Certificate of secondary examinations) and advanced level education (Certificate of advanced secondary education).
I am legally married to one wife, with six children; three boys and three girls. The first born in the family is a boy who is pursuing a diploma in pharmaceutical technology at Eldoret polytechnic; a local national polytechnic. The second born is currently waiting to sit for her Kenya Certificate of secondary Examinations, which is a prerequisite to university admission in our country. The third, a girl is in form one. The rest, two boys and a girl, are in primary school.

My Business

I am currently living in a six acre piece of land; three of which I keep 3 cows, 3 goats and 7 sheep. The remaining 3 acres are used to grow maize, beans, tomatoes and kales. The cow produces about 4 litres of milk in the morning and about 3 litres in the afternoon; total 7 litres daily. One litre is consumed at home and the rest sold locally for Ksh 30 per litre; total 30x6= ksh 180 daily. The monthly gross income from the milk is Ksh 180x30=Ksh 5400. Its expenses are weekly dousing of insecticide costing Ksh 400 (4x100=Ksh 400) monthly and de-worming after three months; which on average costs Ksh 300 monthly. They graze in the open field. Therefore, the cows give me an approximate income of Ksh 4700.
This season I have harvested 20 bags of maize (current price of Ksh 2000 per 90 kg; translating to a total of Ksh 40,000) and 5 bags of beans (current price of Ksh 5,000 per 90 kg bag; translating to a total of Ksh 25,000): total gross income Ksh 65,000. The cost of inputs and labour was Ksh 10,000. Therefore, net income from maize and beans section was Ksh 55,000. This is a monthly income of approximately Ksh 4,500.
The tomatoes and kales have given me this year a gross income of Ksh 90,000 against a total expense of Ksh 25,000, leaving a net profit of Ksh 65.000; translating to a net monthly income of approximately Ksh 5,400.
My wife, who works as a teacher, earns a net salary of Ksh 15,000. This, together with my income from the piece of land totaling Ksh 14,600, is used to pay for the children’s school fees and upkeep; leaving us with roughly Ksh 5,000 for savings and any investments.
I intend to improve the quality and the quantity of my cows. This I intend to do by buying one high grade cow, preferably a Friesian, which produces more milk than my current breed. A Friesian cow produces about 20 litres a day, ten litres in the morning and ten in the afternoon; which would fetch at the current rate of Ksh 30 per litre, Ksh 30x 20 =Ksh 600 per day. This would translate to a monthly gross income of Ksh 18,000. The cost of managing this cow would approximate Ksh 5,000 per month, giving me a monthly net income of Ksh 13,000. A fully grown Friesian cow costs between Ksh 50,000 and Ksh 55,000 locally.
