Hello Mrs Maina, I lent to you before and you paid back fine so I don't know why the second loan is smaller I will email and ask Zidisha staff on your behalf. Certainly I am happy to lend to you again. Best wishes from England

        Hi Beatrice and Hope2012,

I am a Country Liaison Intern with Zidisha and we are honestly still trying to solve this issue. I apologize for the very late response, but we are all putting our heads together to try and see why this happened.

Thank you for your patience and please know we did not forget about this issue!

Hello, my name is Traci Yoshiyama, Zidisha’s Kenya Client Relationship Manager. I am currently residing in Mugaa, visiting Zidisha borrowers in nearby villages.

Huruma, a tucked away dressmaking shop in Kiptangwanyi, belongs to Zidisha borrower, Beatrice Maina. Strewn on its walls are school uniforms for girls of many sizes and colors, while encompassed in a sea of fabric sits Ms. Maina’s employee, hard at work sewing a secondary school uniform. As I speak with Ms. Maina, curious children gather outside Huruma, many wearing sister designs of her wall displays.

The first days of Huruma (Compassion in English) consisted of mending the wear and tear of clothing, but through the harvesting of beans and maize, Beatrice was able to expand her business to specialize in dressmaking. Despite the absence of formal training, with watchful eyes Ms. Maina taught herself to sew, observing the craft through a family member. She then purchased a sewing machine and stocked her shop with fabric from Nakuru. Her aspirations do not end there, for she and her employee will now attempt to learn the art of tailoring. There is currently no tailoring shop in Kiptangwanyi and it is nearly impossible to find a man in Kenya without a suit or in need of one. With this in mind, Ms. Maina’s and Huruma’s future look bright.

Just recently receiving her loan, Ms. Maina plans to purchase a second sewing machine and more fabric. Although business is slow now, the months of September and October bring in a constant stream of customers due to the bean harvest. The second machine will help Ms. Maina produce more ready-made dresses for the upcoming months. Although farming serves as her main source of income, without Huruma, maintaining her shamba would not be possible. With both businesses on her side, she is able to pay for her children’s school fees and provide her family with the security needed to build a sustainable future.

She wishes to tell all her lenders thank you for promoting her. In the past, she has taken out loans with other institutions, but like many Zidisha members, this organization is the one for her. She enjoys the independence it grants her, for meeting with others on a monthly basis often times got in the way of running her business.

I do not leave Kiptangwanyi without sitting down to a cup of tea with Beatrice and like many borrowers I have met, she insisted on treating. With a kindness not often seen, she also walks me to the matatu stage, pays for my fare home, and does not leave without saying, “When you go back home, please do not forget me,” as if that is possible, for although our time together was brief, Ms. Maina has made a lasting impression.

*Unfortunately, my camera was not working at the time, so there are no pictures of Huruma or Ms. Maina.
